Apple Tv / Watch ESPN app

I have Apple Tv and have a friend that said I can use their username and password to activate the Watch ESPN app.
I go to Watch ESPN app on the Apple Tv and get the activation code. I then go to the activation website to enter said code. When I enter it in the Watch ESPN app says that the app has been activated. However when I go to watch something it says the channel is not on the tv package.
My friend has AT&T Uverse cable and internet and they also get ESPN, ESPN2, etc. I have Uverse internet. It never asks me for a username or password.
Any suggestions on how to get this to work?

Considering buying a used apple tv. I have an old roku but I wanna use the air play so I can watch games using my computer coming up in the fall because 1 game on one tv isn't as american.

Strange issue. I borrowed a friend's login and I'm on a different carrier that doesn't even offer watch espn. It worked fine for me. Can't remember for sure but I think I followed the same steps you did. It didn't ask you for the username and password before giving you the activation code?

On the Apple TV it gives me the activation code. From my understanding and experience with other apps on there you go to the es.pn/activation sife and then you out in the provider and code and submit. After that it's supposed to then ask for username and login. But not on this. I'm confused about and can't find any answers anywhere on google.

I was actually able to register on watchESPN with my Uverse internet username and password. I know its only supposed to be for television subscribers, but I guess ATT doesn't have two separate systems or something.
I'm sure it will be swiftly corrected now that I've posted.

Figured it out. I guess since I was connected to my wifi it was picking up my Uverse internet. For some reason I figured I would take my phone and disconnect from wifi and just use LTE. Got the activation code up on the applet tv and then went to the activation site on my phone. Put the code in and submitted it and then it went to a page and asked for a username and password. Now it's working just fine.

You were probably logged into your own U-Verse account when you hit submit -- another work around would be to open an incognito window in chrome / fire fox or to log out of your account before hand.

I already had it working on my iPhone but it wasn't activating right when I tried to do it on the AppleTv.
I am thinking it kept picking up my U-verse internet since my AppleTv is connected through my home network. So when I went to the activation page through Firefox (also tried IE) it would say it activated successfully but you couldn't go to anything other than ESPN 3. So I cut my wifi off on my phone and when I went to the activation website, I put in the code from the AppleTv and it then prompted me to enter a username and password for U-verse Tv. I put that in and hit submit and now I have Watch ESPN on the AppleTv.
I guess I technically could have streamed it from my iPhone or iPad through AirPlay but I don't feel like using battery life to do it so I was going to get it activated one way or another,

I wasn't logged in to any ATT site. I even went as far as to clear all cookies and browser history. I log out of everything before shutting my laptop down so it shouldn't have been logged in. The only thing I can think of is it was somehow picking up on my wifi network and seeing that I had U-verse internet. I don't really know what was going on, but the main thing is I finally got it to activate and I now have ESPN on the AppleTv.
