One thing that I noticed was that Atlanta was never in the top 10. I would not have guessed that San Jose, Dallas, and San Antonio were all larger. I guess a lot more people live outside of the city limits than I'd have guessed.

I went back and checked to see that less than 500,000 live inside the city of Atlanta while there's over 5 million in the metro area. That's some pretty epic sprawl.

You can see in 1950 that 8 of the Top 10 had their peak population. That's when suburbanization started to really kick in...

Interesting, but metropolitan areas are the true measure of city size. Metropolitans are what most people think of when they say where they live or think about other cities.

City limits are pretty meaningless these days and can skew comparison. For example, San Antonio's city limits incorporate over 450 square miles, while Atlanta's is something like 125.

In terms of population Houston may take Chicago's spot in a couple decades...

Just to clarify, this list doesn't include metro area, correct?

Correct, just within the city limits...

Lots of sprawl, but the city limits don't extend very far to begin with. Emory and the CDC aren't located within the city limits for example.

I'd like to see a list of the top 10 metro areas by decade. That would make for an interesting comparison.

It's not. City proper is a stupid parameter. Dallas is massive.

I had a site like that but I lost the link

The most interesting thing was BR went from 30K people in 1940 to 120K in 1950

Which explains why the whole city looks like it was built in the 50s out of shitty, cheap materials.
