Authorities say a teenager from Ponchatoula, LA is missing in the dangerous surf on the Alabama coast. Officials say 17-year-old Chaston Brown went missing around 4 p.m. Sunday in Gulf Shores.

The search had to be suspended after about three hours because of rough surf and fading light, according to WKRG. The search resumed Monday and a dive team is in the water searching for Brown.

Terrible story.

I was in Destin over the 4th, and even though the surf didn't look like much on the surface, the current was very strong. I hope there's a good outcome.

People underestimate subsurface currents - and ripcurrents kill people all the time.

Just came back yesterday from Orange beach. Saturday current was the strongest I have ever personally felt in that area. Waves were over 6 feet at times. Def needed to use the buddy system in the surf. Red flag was up that day as well.

Yeah, I guess every teenager going to the beach should have the wherewithal to read about rip currents before he goes

Maybe a combo of not being in a strong current and knowing not to try and fight it.

If you get stuck in a current it is very easy to wear yourself out in minutes. I got stuck in one in the gulf for a few minutes, managed to get out but it was scary as frick. I don't float like some fatties.

Granted I can feel the currents moving me and just float/let it take me in the directions its going, but I've never been in any immediate danger. Am I just a strong swimmer or lucky?

same here but i am a strong swimmer. Most people that do drown panic. In a lot of cases they can touch bottom or just relax and wait to be carried out of the current

Yes, truly sucks. Feel for his parents and this reminds me why I dont let my kids in the surf alone.
