If music history has taught us anything, it’s that many of today’s heavy metal stars will probably be tomorrow’s classic rock legends. Just think back 30 years, when Metallica couldn’t get a whiff of radio airplay despite filling concert halls around the country, and you’ll understand what we mean. So we asked ourselves which current heavy metal bands seem fated to make this transition and came up with the following alphabetical list of 11 Modern Metal Bands That Are Destined for Classic Rock Greatness. That’s right, this one goes to 11 – enjoy!

Tool
Maybe the greatest compliment one can pay Tool is that the band has remained wholly unique, immediately recognizable, and impossible to categorize into any one style of music over the course of their two-decade-plus career. Not even metal, but we’ll claim them just the same – ditto future classic rock. Suffice to say that, like Led Zeppelin and precious few bands in rock history, Tool has created music that other bands have little hop of replicating, which would explain the scarcity of cover versions attempted through the years.

Queens of the Stone Age are better than any of those bands

I was shocked to see Down on the list. Not a band I could ever put my ears around.

Really? I never listen to them but Pepper is a sick guitarist.

Dream Theater won't be because their music isn't accessible enough to ever be "classic rock". They'll continue to be a niche group that is only really known about and lauded among metal fans.

Shocked may be a strong term.
Revert back to my QOTSA. Think it has more to do with the members of Down than the actual music IMO
to each their own

Dream Theater

Moreso than Tool, Dream Theater is impossible to categorize because one minute they're playing metal and the next bossanova.
They're incredible.
They're incredible.

They were incredible. Then Portnoy left and they lost something the new guy can't replace.
Since Undertow, Tool has consistently gotten a ton of radio airplay. Radio has so overplayed Sober and Schism I can't listen to those songs at all anymore.

Agreed.
But their best song, Rosetta Stoned, has very much been ignored by the radio...and that's a good thing!

Tool and A7X already get tons of radio play. I've heard Mastodon a few times but don't think they'll ever break through to the mainstream. Not sure why The Sword aren't bigger than they are now. They have a nice, easilly accesible classic rock sound. The other bands aren't radio friendly at all.

Dude the song is 13 mins long. Might that be why??

I'm confused...does it matter how long a song is? What's your point?

So, QOTSA are the better than all the bands on that list?
Seriously?
Don't get me wrong, I like QOTSA. However, shouldn't they have to prove themselves a bit more to be the pinnacle of that list?

after seeing tool 5 times and QOTSA once, i'd go see QOTSA again before I saw tool. tool are great live, but QOTSA blew my face off.
