Was at the gym this morning watching a TV monitor while on treadmill. No sound but I read the closed captioning. From memory what the expert guest said was...
"If all airlines equipped their planes with Surface-to-Air Missile Deflection Systems those people would be alive today."
So, the airlines are supposed to assume that SAM missiles will be shot at their passenger planes??

Yeah, that's incredibly dumb. Unfortunately, it's part of the standard mindset of people who have no idea how the real world works.
The chances of a 777 commercial passenger jet needing countermeasures for SAMs are almost infintesimal.
The kinds of people who rant about this stuff are probably the same assholes who would whine about ticket costs if they implemented the ideas they pushed for.

I also saw that yesterday - and it was CNN of all stations that said it as well. Yea, nothing could possibly go wrong. Since when are airline pilots supposed to be trained as fighter pilots?

Fact: If that plane had never of taken off, it wouldn't have been shot down.

Well, jet fuel is a carbon based substance. If planes were solar powered the missile might not have been able to track it.

I think the Israeli national carrier has already equipped their airliners with these types of defenses

The airlines can do this only after they put in ejection seats for unruly/annoying passengers.
