Tax revenue is at record highs adjusted for inflation. Once side has gotten what they wanted (more taxes), will the other side fulfill the compormise and agree to entitlement reform? Entitlements are the single biggest drivers of US debt. Medicare and medicaid are the biggest drivers of the deficit ( even obama agrees ). Seemed kind of irresponsible to saddle an already expensive program with millions of more people.

A national debt crisis affects everybody. Cutbacks on spending only affects certain segments of the populace.

Are a certain, privileged people more important than the entire nation, especially the entire future population?

No.

In short, NO. The last week is proof that this will never occur. The POTUS wants 3.1B for immigration without a plan and we just gave another 600M to Isreal for their aide.

Where is the accountability and cost control? It doesn't exist and won't exist as long as there are no term limits on our elected officials.

America won't wake up until they see a direct reduction in their pay/welfare benefits. Eventually, SS, Medicare, and private retirement funds will be seized to pay this off. Maybe then people will see...

We are under the delusion that only government can provide us some services.

True, even when the same government has failed miserably at everything it ever touched and or controlled.

Yep, we'll only get serious about until it's damn near too late. Hell it may be too late by then anyway.

Complacency is rampant in this country.

Those first two elements sound alot like spending cuts to me, IOW "getting serious about the debt."

There are a lot of gov't services that need to be privatized like USPS and healthcare.

If they ever seized retirement accounts it would crash everything, who would trust where they put their money ever, again?

This. This nation desperately needs a Constitutional Convention to impose term limits on Congress. Furthermore, Justices should be elected officials as they are locally also with term limits.

Elaborate on this a little more..........

Do you suggest a better place to keep ones "retirement" money?

I'm not disagreeing with you........would just like to hear some more input on the matter.

Nope. That would mean politicians being responsible w/ other people's money. Not gonna happen. Their currency is votes...and the more "free" shite they promise, the more votes they get.

Our monetary system is a double edge sword. The whole system and relies upon debt. If we didn't have the debt, we wouldn't have money, which is really "IOUs". It's all messed up...

What debt? Barack says we're fine, no problems. He wouldn't lie to us.

I really wish they'd stop withholding taxes out of people's pay checks. Everyone should be made to write a big 30-50% of their annual salary check to the Feds at the end of the year. shite would change pretty damn quick if that was the case.

The due date for the taxes should be the Monday before election day.

Yeah, and remember when Obama called 4 trillion in additional debt "unpatriotic"?

These blame games can go back and forth all day long, but the root of the problem remains the same; politicians can take/spend whatever they want consequence free.

I think a more relevant statistic is tax revenue as a % of GDP, don't you? That controls for differences in levels of real income and for differences in the distribution of that income.

Republicans have said they wouldn't take a deal with 1 dollar in tax hikes for every 10 in spending cuts.

So don't expect one.
