I'm surprised how very few people know about this story. Stories like this need to be told to restore faith of the American people in our arm services.

I was serving in Iraq about that time and it was tough. But he was right. The surge was working and we were making great strides throughout the country. By the end of the year, you could go weeks without hitting an IED or being in a fire fight.

It really is a shame that the Iraqi leadership has squandered all we gave them.

Google "Brad Kasal"...They called him Robomarine. He's the one in that famous photograph being carried out of a building in Fallujah after being hit 7 times by AK-47 fire and having 43 pieces of hot frag in his body. Lost 60% of his blood, and was still clutching his M9 and his K-Bar in each hand.

Can't even fathom how terrifying it must've been there.

ETA: Michael Burghardt is a pretty interesting read as well.

I've met him. He spoke at my unit's Marine Corps Birthday Ball about 6 years ago. He got promoted to Sgt. Major. He's a legit badass.

I'm currently reading his book, "My Men Are My Heroes"...Dude used to run up this huge hill (mountain for all intents and purposes) with a full pack and purposely fall behind so he could sprint past everyone to the front of the line...

Hard to believe we're coming up on the 10th anniversary of that battle. Doesn't seem like it was that long ago.

Zembiec, what an outstanding human being.

Burghardt

Well, obviously.
quote:

Burghardt, 36, of Fountain Valley, Calif., is probably one of the best-known and most well-respected improvised bomb experts in Iraq, where his skills are in constant demand.
***
Medics cut away his bloody pants to reveal that the backs of his legs had been studded with shrapnel and bruised from the top of his boots to his waist. As they prepared to place him in a stretcher, Burghardt shouted, “No.” He didn’t want his teammates or the insurgents to see him carried from the scene. He was going to walk. As he was helped to his feet, Burghardt said, he felt a wave of anger and adrenaline flow through his system. He had just extended his Iraq tour that morning and he was livid that he had been bested by the bomber. “I was really pissed off that they got me, that after all this time, they got me,” Burghardt said. “I figured the triggerman was still watching, so I flipped him off. I yelled, ‘[Expletive] you! I’ll be out here next week!’”

In the ensuing gun battle, the Iraqis serving beside Zembiec radioed back, “Five wounded, one martyred,” according to battle reports.

This, to me, is fricking incredible. The local Iraqis looked at him as a brother if you really want to read into that. RIP
