Phil, Sergio, or Greg Norman.....
Posted by OutofTownAlumni on 7/20/14 at 3:11 pm01
Who was more unlucky for when they turned pro as well as play during their careers?
Phil had 4 years before Tiger.
Sergio came out at the same time as Tiger.
Greg got screwed in a bunch of majors by record back 9's also came out during Jacks prime.
If any of these turn pro in early mid 80's, how many majors would each have?
Have to say Sergio. He shoots the forth lowest Open score ever and still loses. Having to play in Tigers shadow his entire career. At least Phil had 4 years before Tiger.

Norman seemed to give a few away, but your are right that some super back 9's ran him down.
I'd say that Phil had the worst luck as far as playing during Tiger's run. Phil May have had 3 or 4 more majors if not for Tiger. There was a stretch where other players new on the first tee on athursday that they were playing for 2nd.

This essentially boils down to a Tiger/Jack question.
Need to know how many times Sergio/phil/Norman lost if not for Tiger/Jack.

Serge easy, but we will get a couple of majors before it's all said and done.

Phil would have about 10 majors. But Sergio would have a bunch too IMO.

Isn't this as simple as looking up second place finishes to Tiger?
Or are you talking the "intimidation" factor?

Not that easy. I mean Tiger had Sergio thinking he wasn't good enough to win.

If Sergio would have won that first major at the PGA instead of Tiger it may have taken the pressure off.

I do think if Tiger wasn't around, Phil and Sergio would each have more majors than they currently do. Norman did have some bad luck in people shooting incredible scores or making really improbable shots to beat him, but he was actually the best player in the world for a long stretch of his career. So, I'd put him third in this trio.
I think that Phil would've benefited more than any other player by not having Tiger around. For a good while a couple years ago, Sergio had bad putter problems and wasn't even a consideration in Tour events much less majors.
