Just got interviewed on ESPN at halftime of Sounders - Tottenham game. Bretos said the deal keeps them through the next World Cup but I didn't see any contract detail on the interwebz anywhere.

Congrats to both but I would have liked to see Besler give Europe a try.

I'm a little upset that he isn't going to a better league, but I really can't blame him. KC is his hometown and I'm fairly certain that he is getting paid more now than he would be if he went to Europe.

It's a win-win for him.

I feel like Besler could really benefit the national team with a move to the prem. However, the increased level of play in MLS stands to benefit the entire pool.

I don't really get the urgency improve the MLS and potentially hindering national team by keeping players in inferior league. I'd be perfectly fine with and also believe that the peak of MLS is Liga do Brasil or Argentina Primera meaning that its a league that produces good players who eventually go to Europe with a few aging legends but never really is a top 5 league. Brazil and Argentina do perfectly fine without a top league. I don't think league status is as important as people make it out to be as long as youth system is good.

I always got the feeling that Besler never really had Premier League aspirations. Like in the Road to Brazil 30 for 30 when him and Mix are watching the Champions League final Mix asked him who he was going for and he was just kinda like I really don't care about this game.

Maybe I'm overplaying that exchange but it seems like Besler saw he could play soccer and stay in KC and not much was pulling him away from that.

He's made that more than clear. Maybe he's just happy playing with a good club and not obsessed with the "inferior league" label.

Happy to see it. Besler is our best center back, but he's probably hit his peak and going to play at Sunderland isn't going to turn him into Vincent Kompany.

People want to see the MLS get better but get mad when they take steps to keep their best players. Good for SKC, Besler and Zusi for for coming to deals. Keep paying them Americans

Except MLS can attract High quality foreigners and doesn't need to sell to pay the bills.

Only leagus I don't see MLS passing eventually are La Liga, Bundesliga, and the Premiership.

All the demographic and Economic factors are there. Only thing missing is the Champions league.

MLS has no obligation to the national team. None whatsoever. SKC is doing what is best for SKC, without regard to its implications on the national team, as they should.

But the last point is the problem. Most players around the world are gonna want to play in champions league and without that it's hard to ever compete with top leagues for the truly top players.

Only 3 teams from the top legues get to play in UCL. We don't need Champions league players to be a top 5 league.

The "biggest" team to offer Matt Besler a contract was Sunderland, a team that finished just above the relegation zone.

Mediocre Sacha Kljestan was the only player to feature in the Champions League last year for a lossy Anderlecht side. Unless MLS teams are withholding players from signing with elite club, we should have no qualms with them trying to re-sign their best American players.

It's really more like 4-6 teams that interchange and players are still going to want to play for teams in Ligue 1, Serie A, and Liga Portugesa. You can't be a top leage without having the quality of players that play in today's champions league. I mean even someone like Jermaine Jones was a career CL player.

Like who? Its called a retirement league over here fair or not. Until MLS pulls these guys in their prime thats never going to change

mehh no

There is nothing wrong with it being like the Brazilian and Argentinian league. Very technical and very fast paced. Making the MLS best export its home grown talent.

Salary cap and MLS owning all the contracts is a major factor that hurts. The lack of Champions league football is never going to change. The best players in the world grow up wanting to play in the Champions League not the MLS cup and thats not going to change due to a lot of reasons.

How are you going to handle it 20 years from now when the MLS is going to be one of the best leagues in the world?

Admit it...you will be absolutely miserable won't you?
