Been dousing it with icy hot and rubbing the knot but it's almost too painful to put any pressure on. Any suggestions on loosening this sucker up so I can turn my head to the left again?

Have you had it before?

If you have, you've got it again

I feel like it's a pretty uniquely large knot, it almost feels swollen when I touch it. Getting a legit feel tissue massage seems like it's be closer to torture than relief

Absolutely, but this is the OT and we generalize everything

Abscess. Stab it to relieve the pressure.

I get those from time to time, I think it's stress related, sounds like you're doing what you can do, sometimes you just have to let it run its course

Well I'm intensely stressed at the moment so this makes a lot of sense. Thanks man

Seriously though, apply constant pressure on the knot until the muscles around it start to twitch. Keep the pressure there until the knot releases and the twitching stops. Learned this trick from a friend who is a massage therapist and it works every time. You're basically restricting the nerves so that the brain can't tell the muscle to stay flexed.

That's basically what I've been doing save the twitch indicator as to when to stop.
