I know most will say lateralus.
Tool- You Lied
I know it is a cover originally written by Peach but Tool does it better.

Tough question... It really changes depending on my mood

I don't even think I can even narrow to a top 5... Throwing some out there though.

Aenima
Eulogy
3rd Eye
Push-It (Salival Version)
No Quarter (Zep Cover)
4 Degrees

And there's a damned good reason for that.

I like Tool a lot - including this song.

However, outside of Lateralus - I like:

46 & 2

Eulogy

Ænima

Stinkfist

Prison Sex

Sober

...probably in that order, with 46 & 2 and Eulogy being 2a and 2b. And, on some days, I like either or both of those the best - particularly Eulogy. But Lateralus may be the best heavy song of the 21st century.

Spin, revolver, or one of those magazines named Lateralus the best Metal song of the last 20yrs...

I may be along here, but I really don't consider anything that Tool has done to be Metal

Prog Rock or Hard Rock IMO

I was careful to say "heavy", brah - for that very reason.

In my mind, Tool is right at the line, particularly with what kids today call "metal" - heck, Metallica from 1990 on barely qualifies as metal, today. I'm not sure Priest and Maiden would qualify as "metal" today, so I don't get hung up on labels.

However, I'm more of a fan of heavy music, generally, and I prefer heavy music with a sense of musicality, rather than distortion, tempo and anger for their own sake. Tool is right in my wheelhouse.

Well according to Carey, the track that they have done for the new album is very heavy in comparison to what they usually do. Will be interesting to see what they've come up with.

A very underrated tool song is H. Lateralus is my favorite overall as well. Also, I thought the grudge was the perfect opening song when seeing them live.

Honestly, of all their albums, Rosetta Stoned and No Quarter (Zeppelin cover) are their crowning achievements.

First of all I have to say you just got me onto a new Tool top 5.

Top 5 in no particular order:

Sober
The Patient
Eulogy
Push It
Jimmy
Aenima
Throw in the song on OP somewhere.

I know that's seven but some of these are ties.

a catalogue of dozens of well-written originals, and a cover song is their crowning achievement?

Agreed. Hard to narrow down because of all the great music but I wouldn't have called a cover a "crowning achievement"

I would have to say that the Aenima album is a top three album period including all artists
