Have to say I'm really disappointed with this news for a few reasons. But dude goes out a winner.

I love watching him.

Clearly Germany has no replacement at outside back.

Does this change how much of a favorite Germany is for the Euro? I have to think they are not longer the clear favorite, but now part of a pack of favorites?

Erik Durm and Sebastian Jung could potentially fill in. Both are good players.

Sad to see Philipp Lahm go, but he's saving his legs for Bayern so I can appreciate it. He'll eventually coach the national team, I'm guessing.

That's a shame. He would still be world class and one of the best RB's in the world in the next cycle. Will the captaincy go to Bastian?

Very surprised but can't fault him for going out on top. He was one of those players you could always count on. It may be a good decision long-term for the team, to give a young player a chance now and let him work his way into the team before the Euros, then use that as a warm-up for the World Cup in 2018.

that would be my guess. armband or not, he's always a captain on the field.

Fixed. Captain Beniesta + Coach Lahm = WC Title in 2030.

Not that surprised to be honest. He's 30. 34 by the next world cup.

Plus I am sure he has never really had an off season since turning 13. With all the international play, I am shocked more players don't retire by 30, 31 range.

Edit: vastly different circumstances but was not disappointed when Scholes retired early from international play.

Is this the appropriate thread for me to announce my own retirement from playing soccer? After learning about my torn meniscus, I have decided to step down from playing the occasional pick-up game. I will also take myself out of the player pool for the United States. While not quite as old or accomplished as Philip Lahm, I think the timing is right.

Germans have the Belgium problem. Too many center backs, not enough fullbacks. So Mustafi gets stuck at right back.

I'm not gonna lie, I'm a bit surprised he's not gonna take another crack at the Euros.
