Time to revisit an old conundrum

I offered this question in 1997 on a Poli board 8 years before I came here. Not sure if/and/or what year I posted it here.
But, it's been 17 years since I got into an animal rights argument that generated this question that has recurred to me due to the invasion of 'poor children' at what used to be the US border.
Here it is...
You are at the top of a cliff. You have two ropes. One in each hand. On your right hand you hold a rope tied to your dog's collar. On your left hand you hold a rope tied to a random Latin American immigrant trying to get into the US.
You cannot save either from certain death unless you let go of one rope and use both hands to pull the other to safety.
My answer 17 years ago was 'my dog is coming home with me.' The majority of posters on that board agreed.
I'm wondering if things have changed since then. Thoughts on your choice today?

Dogs are better than people.
Therefor, Rex is the best poster on this site.

I once had a woman I was dating tell me that she thought I loved my dog more than I loved her. Need I tell you how that worked out ?

Tbone of Pine Estates would be coming home in my gas guzzling Silverado.

I love my dog....
but i would hope a random person would do the same for my kid.
I dont think I could let go of the random kid.

quote:I would say you are a borderline sociopath. Save a dog & let a stranger die?

I'm not sure what the number of dogs that would equal a human life to me, but it would have a lot of zeros.
ETA: While we're at it, looking at other responses, does where someone is born somehow contribute to how much their life is worth saving? Because that is really messed up.

This is great for mental stroking, but in reality what does it prove? We'll never actually be in this situation so it's somewhat nonsensical. A better question is there are dying children across the border who need medical attention. To give them medical attention, they will need to receive it for free while your medical premiums and taxes go up in order to pay for it. Do you let the kids die, or pay the extra money?

I love dogs and can't stand people, but a human life has more intrinsic value than a dog's--and it isn't close.
This shouldn't be a difficult question for a reasonable person.

Love my dog.
Save the person. They are of (in my worldview) eternal value.
