For y'all who work in the oil-field, I've been wanting to know, what is it really like working off-shore? Is it hard to be away from your family for weeks at a time? Do you have to work long hours on the rig, and does the hard work/conditions pay off with the money you make? I know working off-shore is dangerous work, there are a bunch of maritime injury lawyers in Louisiana for a reason, and I've known people who have gotten seriously injured while working off-shore. So overall, you oil-field peeps, what is it all about, working on a rig?

You'll eventually turn ghey, because there are no women and you'll have needs.

I have a friend who loves it. He goes out for a month at a time and then comes in for two weeks. He makes a shite ton of money that he barely spends because he's never home and he's single.

I work for a service company, might be offshore for a week and only work 10 hours but I'm getting paid around the clock. So I'm not in an office being monitored by a boss, or have work to turn in, or act busy when I don't feel like doing anything. I get paid to eat and sleep, but there's times I'm up for long hours.

Being away sucks, but it's a nice getaway, your friends and family get to miss you, and you get to miss them. It puts a value on things/time most people take for granted.

Money is great, I'm doing it to get a nice start on retirement at an early age. Then I'll try to find something at the office in another 5 or 6 years, when I'm ready to have a family.

The people you work with aren't the type you'd normally surround yourself with, tho.

It all depends on your job. If you had an office job it would be like going to your work, except your work had dorms and you had to stay there for 14 days. Same for the people who work outside, but it's manual labor. 12 hour shifts. I would be making a lot more if I worked offshore. Some of it can be dangerous, but as long as you pay attention and understand what's going on, you know if something is becoming unsafe and you can shut it down.

I imagine for a single guy it can be awesome.

No way I would ever do it with a family.
