Do you believe that a government office commands respect?

A common saying is 'Don't respect the man but you need to respect the office.'

Why? If government is a necessary evil why should I hold any government position in high regard?

Romans 13:1-6

This covers all the 'Christian' posters. They should respect the office

Then again, today's ' Christian' tends to pick and choose what they want to adhere to

When an a-hole missuses a gun, I do not blame (think less of) the gun. The a-hole was the one that abused the power.

We have a LOT of a-hole misusing perfectly good offices

Respect in as so much as it's the government that has the guns.

I try to respect the office of the President past present and future.

Any others...not so much.

How the hell do you misuse a gun? By throwing it at someone instead of pulling the trigger? I thought a gun only had one main use? Please explain these misuses you have observed

Depends on what you mean. In my humble opinion, certain offices command some modicum of deference if you consider yourself a willing and active member of a legal or political entity--like a nation, state, etc. Certain offices are infused with historical and symbolic meaning. Our presidency, for instance, was something of a peculiar institution at its inception. The rest of the western world had other ideas at the time, but many came to emulate it in many ways.

What are your reasons for doing so?

Interesting take.

Is the office symbolic of the country more than of the Federal government?

Should a man be respected as a father just because he has a kid even if he is a lousy one?

In point of fact, our system is one of the few in the world in which the roles of Titular Head of State and Legal Head of Government are combined.

The President is symbolic of the United States, our commitments, our powers and limitations.

A lot of small and big things. I mean why respect anything? The flag? Our constitution?

A anarchist would laugh at such notions but its the notion of something bigger than yourself. Hero's myth's and legends all help glue a people together. Stories and pageantry. Traditions.

Better men than me have written on the good and bad of such things.

I try to honor those who gave so much so that we could discuss and bitch about such things.

Hope that was a answer of some sort

I've never understood why this logical fallacy is so common. I can't respect an office, it has done nothing to earn my respect because it just exists and does nothing, the holder of the office is the one that has to earn that respect and is the one using the tools of the office.

Ok, just read navy tiger's take. Maybe. But I have to admit if I ever met a US senator or representative, I would think poorly of them and mentally stereotype them as a liar and sorry person before saying a thing to them or them saying a thing to me.

Only if the person holding the office respects the office.

No office deserves respect. Only individuals who have earned respect deserve it. The fairy tale of offices deserving respect is rooted in monarchies and dictatorships, it's sole purpose to maintain their power over the sheep.
