Do you at least agree that Demps has pulled in more talent than anticipated based on the assets on hand since they shifted to the "surround AD with young vets" model?

Year 1 Ryno + Lopez
Year 2 Holiday + Evans
Year 3 Asik

It doesn't seem crazy that Demps would be able to pull in a quality SF based on what he's been able to do the past 3 years. If Demps finds a way to turn Gordon's salary slot into a B SF, how in the hell is AD + 5 B players "stuck in mediocrity"? We'd at worst be a Rich Man's Memphis Grizzlie's in that case. They come close to crashing the party nearly every year and we'd be better than them.

some people for some reason think if we aren't a immediate contender dell has failed. becoming a consistent winner for a few seasons even if not a title threat is a good thing. it increases attendance, increases our team's profile and shows potential superstar free agents we are possibly one big name away from being a contender. a 7-8 seed this season and maybe a 5-6 seed next year would signal out that we are one piece away from being a true threat. superstars looking for titles could definitely be enticed to come join AD in the quest. I like where we are at right now

I may get bashed for this, but I think Reke could turn into something better than a B player. I also think Dell has done a great job, considering what he inherited. He moved some really shitty pieces and turned this team into an exciting, young team that will compete as they grow.

this is what our potential is in the model of A-F players. Remember potential, the only bone-a-fide A player we have is AD

A players-Superstars
AD
Reke
Jrue

B players-Players who could start on any team
EG
Ryno
Asik

C players-Players who could start if needed, but shouldn't be relied upon to be your key players. Solid role players
Rivers
Withey
Aminu
Ajinca

D players-Guys who can have great games every once in a while, but should not be relied upon to start
Miller
Smith
Babbit

F players-bench warmers
none on pels since steamer left

i think we bring back Miller and Aminu fwiw

I'm all in favor of what Dell has done. Instead of waiting for guys to develop through the draft, we have brought on young veterans who have already jumped over that learning curve. All of these guys are in their early-mid 20s and i feel like we are building a team that can sustain and build together.

Your fantasies of landing a superstar free agent will never happen. At best, the pels will be a lower seed playoff team. If everyone stays healthy, and if the coaching is great (not good but great) ..and if the team chemistry is stellar.

Superstars arent going to choose to come to new orleans to play nba basketball. Never gonna happen. Put down the crackpipe. We'll be lucky to develop top draft picks or young traded players into stars, but the top superstars coming to nola out of free agency aint gonna happen. We are small market. Weak fan support with fan's infected with a defeatist "we're chicken little underdogs and proud and happy about it" attitude.

Lebron, Durant, Melo, Howard, Kobe, Wade...no free agent on that level of stardom will ever sign with the pelicans. Let that dream die. Accept what the pelicans are, and that theyre not the spurs and never will be. We might even come remotely close to having the talent on the floor that the spurs have, but the achilles heel will be that we have no popovich to lead them.

I think the Pelicans have a perception problem when it comes this idea.

People talk about what Dell has done as if he's thrown away the future chase wins now, kind of screwing with our franchise player's growth potential and when he'll actually be ready to win games. Thats just not the case.

Last summer when Iguodala was a free agent there was some talk the Pels might go after him. I was completely against that. Thats a "toss the future aside to win now," move. Iggy's really solid, but he's a decade older than Davis. You don't pair those two together. Any move(s) like that would have been really bad, imo.

What he did though, was grab young players in their early 20s, all years BEFORE their prime, who could grow and develop alongside Davis for years to come. I think it was shrewd. Injuries aside, it allows for a better product and a better supporting cast for Davis while he ascends.

Its a talented young group who all still have room to grow their games.

If(big if) they're able to stay healthy, I think the front office will be vindicated in the end.

I have yet to buy one myself. Im afraid as soon as I buy an AD shirt he'll bolt. Like when I got the cp3 jersey. Two years later he was gone to L.A.

I know it. I hate to sound like i'm pissing in someone's cheerios, but I just cant stand these people who think a free agent superstars will sign up to play as a Pelican one day, somewhere over the rainbow, wayyy up high

I'll buy a pelican's shirt and take my family to a few games every year like always and we'll enjoy it win or lose, but I also know what the Pelicans potential ceiling looks like. I dont think that will ever change being an nba team in nola.

Dell has filled this team with players who are fun to watch/root for. Exceptions being Gordon who is not fun, and AD who you cant really give him credit for getting, that credit goes to God/Stern. But I love having Jrue, Reke, Ryno, and hell, I've always been excited to watch Rivers play as well. As a small market team, can you really ask for more than that; a fun team you care about. I think the wins will come. But in the meantime, Im more than pleased with the team he has put together. More than I expected for sure.

I think the problem is that people expect to either win a championship this year or tank and draft #1 every year. There is no building or middle ground.

AD is the engine that drives this team. He's our superstar. And most superstars don't come out and go to NBA championships. Not Jordon, Not LeBron, Not Kobe. People need to ease up a little.

And you have to like what Dell has done. At the time, everyone thought the EG signing was a necessity which it was. Evans, Ryno and Jrue are all really good players and Asik this year is a steal. There's more talent on this team then there has been in a long long time.

My only complaint is more of Dell and Monty not being on the same page... or in the same book for that matter. That being said, Dell can only get certain players. Monty needs to use them better.

Great post, as always.

If Dell pulls off a Gordon for B player at SF next offseason, he deserves an award for successfully completing the most creative, criticized rebuild in the history of ever.

The roster is not complete. But this offseason has given Dell some breathing room, and a little more time to work on his project. Hopefully the season goes well. He's done a great job, despite what Simmons and ESPN believe.

Good. God. Son.

We have a star arguably better than 4 of the guys you listed. And he's 21. And we have him for, what, 7 more years before he can leave.

I saw this in a Pelicans.com article on Asik this morning.

quote:

For big men who play in the paint in the Southwest Division, there are no nights off, no games where less than maximum effort is required. Five-time NBA champion San Antonio is spearheaded by Tim Duncan, who’s somehow still playing at an All-Star level at age 38.

If we build the team right and AD stays here for his career this could be one hell of a run.

Totally agree. I've never understood how Dell could even be on the hot seat. He has transformed the roster into youthful fringe stars, totally opposite of what Bower was doing. He had no choice in matching EG, the Reke signing and Holliday trade both don't look bad at all now with the inflated market, and AD is a star. Trading a mid round pick for a defensive center who we should be able to re-sign. Turning Ayon (a gem) into Ryno (one of the best stretch 4's in the league on a bargain contract).

Hell, he's missed on some things but the way he pulled of this Asik trade without giving up Rivers, Ryno, etc. is a thing of beauty.

The west is deep, it's got a lot of good teams but if we stay away from the injury bug we had last year, it's going to be exciting.

As always, my biggest concern is our coach but now he has the personnel he needs.
