Shell said on Tuesday (July 15) it has made a major oil discovery in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico about 75 miles offshore. The company predicts the new find holds 100 million barrels of oil equivalent.

Together with Shell's two previous Norphlet discoveries, named Appomattox and Vicksburg, the latest discovery brings the area's total oil potential to more than 700 million barrels of oil equivalent.

Shell partnered with Ecopetrol America Inc. of Colombia and Nexen, a Canadian oil and gas company, to drill the Rydberg well.

Wasn't Nexen purchased by CNOOC?

Either way

I thought only part of Nexen was purchased by CNOOC.

Yes, the deal closed a while ago. CNOOC allows Nexen to operate under the Nexen flag, the rules put in place on the US division by the Senate subcommittee were pretty wild: No communications between US employees and other divisions, Nexen had to divest assets within x miles of military bases, cannot operate, background checks on current employees, amongst many other strange provisions.

The norphlet trend is the only real asset Nexen has in the gulf. Shell pretty much leads them around on a leash. Part of the buyout agreement was no layoffs for the Canadians in Calgary, but I am hearing they are letting people go. Sad, used to be a great independent to work for.

No it was a complete buyout. 15 billion and some change. I think it was the largest foreign transaction ever completed by a Chinese company. Deal took a long time to close, Had to jump through a ton of regulatory bodies in Canada, US, and UK
