Why is "illegal" frowned upon when referring to a law breaking immigrant?

If the immigrant is breaking U.S. laws, that person is committing an illegal act, hence illegal immigrant.
Should we use the word "criminal" instead?
What the frick are they if not "illegal immigrants"?

Liberals think of all of us as once "illegal".
Therefore immigrant is better sounding.

It is the most neutral and descriptive term that accurately portrays what they are doing in the eyes of the law and legalese alike.
It's frowned upon for PC bullshite.

Because it insensitive and mean.

It depends on he infractions. Their only crime is often laboring for a menial wage under a social security number that is not their own, paying taxes along the way.
What do I call that?
A fricking immigrant trying to stay alive in an expensive arse country.
A criminal is nefarious, malicious, and potentially dangerous. If an immigrant meets that standard, call him a criminal.

I guess you didn't see the story about the "immigrant" who just murdered a woman and kidnapped her kids in metairie. Is that malicious and dangerous enough for you?

Because motives are what determines whether a behavior is criminal.
ETA: to answer OP, because "illegal" is mean and hurts feelings.

Nobody reasonable criminalizes the act of trying to work. Especially calling it fraud.

Their crime is breaking the law by not following proper immigration law and procedure.
You call it illegal.
You call it illegal.

2. contrary to or forbidden by official rules, regulations, etc.: The referee ruled that it was an illegal forward pass.
noun 3. Informal. illegal alien.

I don't care if you call the illegal aliens.
I care that we are classifying them as criminal aliens. Big difference.

So cool, we can all divvy them up and everybody gets a few to help support the family.

Because calling things what they are destroys their message. It constantly reminds people that those in question are lawbreakers.

I disagree with you. That is the root of the crime, the illegal alien obtaining work with a fake social security number.
We call that fraud, even though she/he actually pays the government non refundable SS tax on his wage. Thus, he is a criminal alien.

Or, they could be just working for cash. Either way, it necessarily requires the illegal immigration to have occurred prior to that. They were already a criminal. By definition.

They are "undocumented immigrants".

Too harsh. In the not so distant future, if you find undocumented immigrants living in your basement they will be considered undocumented residents of your home. You will not be able to have them arrested for criminal trespassing.

They are actually breaking "administrative" laws not criminal law.
immigration courts fall under the executive branch not the judicial.
