I bet normally they would have more people covering it, but everyone can't stand guard. They were having a huge celebration for restoring power. I think there are also advantages to not having your armory closer. You don't want children stumbling in on it. They didn't have a need for it to be close until they met the apes anyway. They were still underestimating the intelligence of the apes the entire movie. Also, from all indications, apes had no interest in using guns until Koba shot that guy.

ETA: Also, the armory was hidden. The only reason Koba knew where it was is because he secretly followed some people to it. If there was an attack on the town, they would probably retreat to the armory.

but if the wall is where your line of defense is I'd probably want the majority of my weaponry right there

also mentioned it in the OP, but how does the idiot driving the tank not have that thing latched up?

The armory is not that far from the main complex. You're reaching. Within seconds he was in the main complex to warn them.

Why would he have the hatch locked? A guy was shooting the big gun on top which required the hatch to be open. Did you see the movie?

I just saw the movie for a second time today and it still holds up as greatness. The nitpicking shite in this thread is reaching more than anything I've ever seen.
