I know a lot of people work in IT around here, share giant fails as you see them.

I will tell you mine, which was the point of this thread. So my work is rolling out an internal website like youtube, where employees can post videos and share them with teams. its a good idea as our collaborative file sharing system doesn't stream videos well.

Anyway, the name of the website they came up with is also the name of a porn website. So unless you put the rest of the intranet name, you get sent to a porn tube style website.

IT doesn't fail, it's all user error.

Sounds like user error to me.

User error capping off a pretty good IT joke/cruel ploy.

this is why people hate IT. Its real easy to forget to add ".intranet.companyname.com" or whatever it is. To have it go to a porn website is just a giant fail.

IT doesn't make it go there. The internet address the user typed in does.

Now, the IT department not blocking explicit websites, depending on whether they're allowed to or not, may be considered a fail by most.

I actually was kidding, but are you saying they set up intranet.pornsite.com. It seems like that would be something they don't really control unless they either owned pornsite.com or were changing the DNS requests for pornsite.com for all computers inside their LAN. Definitely an IT fail to have an internal site point to another companies domain.

or they could have picked a name for the website that wasn't a porn site. that would have also fixed the issue.

They sent out a mass email "Check out [i}companyname[/i]tube for your videos"

That just happens to a porn website. they had a link to the actual website but if you were to follow the email name, boom - dicks.

They block it but we are about 35% remote workers and most don't bother with VPN since it slows down everything.

Why not use DNS aliasing for the internal address?

Yeah, I think the mistake here is not adding the correct entries on their DNS servers.

You can redirect any URL to the internal webserver.

I don't work in IT, but the one thing our IT dept does is tell us to restart the computer, no matter what the issue is. I'm pretty savvy when it comes to computers and I find it pretty funny.

Help Desk script.

But I'd imagine the HD gets tons of calls that are solved by having the user 1) turn the PC on, 2) turn the monitor on, 3) reboot the system.

I am a held desk supervisor and the above is correct. It doesn't work all of time but it is part of any basic computer troubleshooting process.

Most "technical" problems are caused by a failure of the keyboard-to-chair interface.

You'd be surprised how often that actually does solve issues.
