Has anyone here ever lived in or visited the United Kingdom? If so, what was the experience like? I've always wanted to visit the region, and I'm a fan of British culture and the history of the area.

I spent over a week in London 10 years ago. English culture is very different from what you see on TV, at least in London. London has a humongous Indian community and a sizable Muslim minority. Everything is very expensive, public transportation is really convenient, the food outside of expensive, chic restaurants is very meh, the people of London (not to be confused with those in the country side) are only a notch less rude than New Yorkers, ect.

It's certainly a cool place to visit, but it's not what you'd expect.

I "lived" there for 5 months for an internship. I had a really good time, but it was a difficult adjustment. 5 months was long enough. I wouldn't want to live there permanently.

Lol dude I meant who here has visited the United Kingdom? Sheesh, I didn't think the wording left that much open to interpretation.

Yes

Cold, grey, dank, smallish and oldish mostly.

Good. Cheers.

Lol mainly British hard rock/heavy metal: Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Sabbath, Ozzy, Zeppelin, The Who, etc. Without the Brits, heavy metal and rock n' roll itself would be very different.

I also love the accent, and the history of Britain. So sue me lol.

I'd imagine that people from Texas and the South would have a difficult time adjusting to living in the UK. Homes are old and quirky to say the least. People mostly keep to themselves and don't want to engage in small chit-chat (especially on the tube).

Only visited, but as others have mentioned, London is quite expensive. I'm a history nerd, so I definitely enjoyed the old history of the city. Cab drivers are great and much more proficient than what you would find in the states. I spent a bit of time in some of the pubs and the people we met were great.

London is expensive old money city. You pay the same price as usa but in euro so the exchange rate (1.5-1) fricks you. Tons of tourists like NYC. Food is not good but with yelp and urban spoon you can find good stuff.

Scotland was amazing. Edinburgh specifically I would go back in a heartbeat. Tons of culture, great food. They have a castle in the middle of the city that's 3,000 years old. Weather does suck though. It's like a colder version of Seattle.

lived in Cambridge for six weeks

I loved every second of it. London is an incredible city, you can get anywhere by train; rented a car and drove from Cambridge to Stonehenge and it was a cool drive

ETA one thing that blew was the house I was living in didn't have AC (like many houses there) and I was there during a heatwave. Pretty miserable

Been to London, but I wasn't really there long enough to fully experience the culture. It was expensive, though, compared to a lot of other places in Europe.

I'm in the military, and have spent quite a bit of time there...it's great! You're very much aware of being in a different land and culture, but have the advantage of being able to read their language even when you can't understand it! Depending on where you are, the accents may take some getting used to... Someone once said that "to be tired of London, is to be tired of life", which I believe to be true, but to really see the country, you need to leave London and visit the smaller cities and towns.
