What area of the parish goes out of their way to derail this project? Central? Zachary? "St. George?"

This project benefits the entire city and parish, but I'm sure there are lot of folks who won't see it that way. I would love to see them restored with a new crop of Florida bass fingerlings.

The same NIMBY's who stopped a somewhat similar proposal several years back that would have done away with that archaic little-used golf course and changed the whole area into a showcase type city park?

Wasn't that people who actually lived in the vicinity of City Park that killed that project?

Right, that's who I'm talking about.

The lakes are primarily responsible for keeping Baton Rouge from being a full blown wasteland of suburban sprawl. If we are going to spend public funds on something, I can't think of something in the city more worthwhile.

Wouldn't it be in their best interest to have the lakes rehabilitated?

I believe the LSU lakes restoration was initially a US Army Corp of Engineers project prior to Katrina. However, once Katrina happened, the project was scrapped.

This. I wish something could be done also to resurrect Spanish Lake and Alligator Bayou. I've also heard that there may be some kind of rehabilitation project planned for Bayou Manchac.

Connecting surface streets?

However, I agree that it is a worthwhile project. The closure of City Park Golf course was shut down by the local residents. Probably because they're the ones using the golf course.

Some other worthwhile projects include:
light rail from LSU to the State Capitol and from the River Center to Independence Park and BRCC

I will be very interested in seeing the final plans and the cost attached. The dredging, I believe, is being paid for by the corps but what to do with the sediment will be an interesting by-product of the final plans. Living in close proximity, I want to support this and if done correctly this could be the crown jewel of the city..

Why would you need a train to take you from LSU to the State Capitol. It's only a few miles. Decent bus service on Government Street can get from the River Center to BRCC and IP.

This would do great things to alleviate some of our traffic woes, but it'll never happen.

a northern loop

I like the idea of a loop, but loop projects quickly become less about moving traffic efficiently to more about economic development, which creates more traffic issues. I'd rather seem a Westbank Expressway-type project along Florida Boulevard and Airline Highway. But, again, it'll never happen. I also like the idea of a southern loop using existing roads that would allow traffic to bypass Baton Rouge.

The true Eco position would be to restore them back to the swampy Cypress wetlands they once were, instead of a lake.

Hold your tongue mister. That was the only course I could afford to play in college. $3.05 twilight fees.

As Homey the Clown would say "I don't think so". There are all kinds of "old money" and hipsters that live around the Lakes - it ain't gonna happen.

I believe much of the lake system is part of BREC, and as a taxpayer in EBR parish I would fully support a plan to help BREC and LSU(who owns the rest of the system) to take care of the lake system.

I was also for keeping City Park golf; however, the decline in overall play on all BREC courses has changed my mind.

City Park was just given a huge makeover. I think they messed up by including a golf course in the changes. But hindsight is 20/20.

From what others here have stated BREC has a huge surplus. I'd recommend using a large part of this surplus on City Park/lake system.

And yes, I support SG too, but I'm not so myopic to realize the entire parish would benefit from a better "central park and lakes system" and we all could enjoy it.

True, but instead of becoming a true cypress swamp as it once was, it would more likely become a nasty little willow thicket.

Why do you say this. The "old money" didn't stop the last project in 1983. I think the locals are the ones actually pushing for the lakes' restoration.
