Is S2 of Breaking Bad some of the most depressing television put to screen?

Spoilers obviously.

In the process of rewatching the series and just finished up with S2. I mean my God man. Between the heightening tension of Walt/Skyler, Hank's PTSD, Combo's death, the meth head family and that little boy, Jesse getting kicked out by his parents then meeting the love of his life...who then he awakens to her death. Jane's father's issues and subsequent plane crash. The list goes on. Don't get me wrong, I know its all necessary to the overall story (and things proceed to get much more badass in S3-5B) but Vince is a tortured soul to cram all these heavy issues into one season.

You must not watch many documentaries.

I'm talking in terms of scripted television shows. (I know I went a bit overboard in the title with the hyperbole.

The main reason I quit watching BB

Never made it past halfway through season 2. Loved season 1 but 2 just wore me down. Just didn't feel the same.

Need to watch the whole series to totally understand the rise and fall of each character. I've been thinking, and Requiem for a Dream is probably the bleakest fiction ive seen along with antichrist but that was a bit more detached from reality.

It is depressing, but that doesn't mean it isn't a great show.

I took a break midway thru season 4. At this point I don't even have the urge to finish. Depressing characters and constant tension. Its a quality show that I just don't love.

Well damn. I started watching Breaking Bad a couple of weeks ago, and I stopped watching after the fourth episode because it was depressing. My friends keep saying it gets better... I guess it doesn't.

Your loss

You've missed out on arguably the two greatest seasons in TV history. (4 and 5/6)

If it didn't connect with you after 4 episodes then yeah, you might as well stop because you aren't going to enjoy the rest. It worked for me from the first episode.

I agree with this - at least 4 to 6, anyway.

I was hooked right away - I had heard the praise and Season 5 was about to start, so I binge watched and caught up in time to watch 5 as it aired.

In addition to Cranston (the role for which he'll be remembered) - Aaron Paul ended up being an happy accident. Although I didn't care for Jesse much early on, he grew on me. The intent was to kill him off at the end of Season 1 (and it was re-addressed again at later points) - but he impressed the production and creative staff so much, they kept him around.

Those of you who watched it all the way through - try to imagine it without Jesse after Season 1 (and, again, I was neither a big fan of Aaron Paul or the character Jesse, but I admit, it worked.)

I don't even know how they'd do it. Literally have nothing

It sucks for me because I know it's a really quality show, but it just left me drained emotionally after each episode. I couldn't imagine how shitty I'd feel after a binge watching.

It felt amazing to me. I binged the first 4 season, and it was incredible IMO. I couldn't stop watching. There would be nights I'd watch 8 episodes then drag arse at work because of it

Season 2 is nothing depressing compared to Jesse in the second half of season 5.

I have a hard time watching his scenes.

If he doesn't win an Emmy for that, he got robbed.

The other thing that's striking is that Aaron Paul is 35 years old - credible as a character 5 years younger.

He just had it rough for most of the show. The end of the show was the worst though, by far!
