Asik is a very good player and a true difference-maker on the defensive end. Unfortunately for the Pelicans, he has two huge downsides that make the trade incredibly short sighted: Asik only has one year left before becoming an Unrestricted Free Agent and his contract calls for a substantially higher salary in the final year than his cap number.

The crazy thing is that I really like the fit of Asik on the Pelicans for this one glorious season.

This guy sounds dumb.

Unless Tom Benson wrote the article, it's a really stupid knock on the deal.

Obviously they are comfortable paying him $15 million this season, so I don't think people should assume they'll go cheap when he hits FA. To get Asik we gave up the asset we needed to move Gordon to put us in a position to bid on Asik next offseason. That tells me they are comfortable paying Asik a decent amount of money and having his Bird Rights puts us at the front of the line to sign him. We didn't give up a pick with the intention of renting Asik.

The author assumes no good free agent would ever re-sign with New Orleans. It seems to be a national consensus (and completely wrong).

I hate to say but the dude is pretty dead on about this part of it

If Asik walks after one year, and this move was our big off-season move, then they better fricking clean house with this front office

What are the number of teams willing to pay Asik $15 million? It looks like only us, the Sixers and Celtics. That's not necessarily a good thing that we were willing to pay more than anyone else, but I do think it's enough to keep people from assuming he's got one foot out the door already. My concerns about Asik staying are more about how he likes his role, not money. We know that he didn't like being relegated to a backup role, will playing 25 MPG as a "starter" be enough for him?

The center FA class of 2015 ain't nothing to sneeze at. This year there was only Gortat and Jordan Hill, and they got overpaid thanks to lack of selection. Next year Asik will be one of many good guys up for grabs, most'll probably resign, but it ain't a sure bet he walks.

Giving the trade a D is asinine. The trade's only flaws are completely unrelated to the game of basketball itself.

We have his bird rights so we have the best chance at resigning him next season.

Say we have a good year and we keep the draft pick. Even if Asik walks, Gordon could very well opt out. That leaves us with our first round pick and a very good amount of cap space.

Not a bad situation at all.

if asik won't re-sign after we offer a market rate, we might as well fold anyway.

if we can't retain guys we trade for, we are doomed. we have to trade for guys like this b/c we can't sign them (which is a point oft-forgotten in the criticisms of the move)

10 to 1 says that ain't happening. There's not another team on planet earth that will pay that joker anywhere near $15M.

But if he has a good season, someone may give him a good longer term deal.

With his injury history and his obvious desire to get out of New Orleans, there's a very good chance he would leave for a longer deal.

Honest question to respond to this: Do you think we pay him ~$15M/year to play 25mpg? I think that would be a bigger mistake then Gordon's contract.

What makes Asik a $15mil per year player. 5ppg 8rpg

I know he's a defensive presence. But $15mil per year is too high for his numbers.

What am I missing here?
