I got called to a job in the Bywater the other day. Guy tells me his fridge is not coming on.
So I think "needs a relay, a quick $125 and done"

So I schedule him in that day as I usually try to get fridges done ASAP.

It's on Royal near the joint, so I am already planning lunch after.

I pull up to the house, and it looks abadoned. No door on the front, half of the siding pulled off exposing 2x4"s underneath.
My bad vibe alert kicked off, and I was about to just No-show on the customer. But then a guy came up to my truck.
--"You come for the Bikes?"
Me- "No I come for the fridge"
--"well you can't HAVE my fcking fridge, those (multiple) outside work.

I then show him my workorder with the address on it for this derelict house.

I am told "oh it's under renovation, the apartment in the back is livable that is where the broken fridge is.

I walk past a mountain of bikes to the door.
I had to climb over trash to get inside.
Floor to cieling this place was full of food stuff. Old rusted cans of nacho cheese and peas and stuff.
I looked at the fridge. Which reminded me of Katrina. The food went bad in it and they just left it there for a few weeks.

So I told them I needed to check the wiring to the compressor. It took these two guys 20 minutes to clean an area just so I could slide the unit out four feet.

I open the back and rats came running out.
I looked inside and the wrires were all eaten up.
I fill out the invoice and tell him. "I'm not going to charge you for the service call, just our minimum fee of $40"
well he complains about that. Since "I didn't do anything"
Argue back and forth where I agree to look at two more units later.

I took payment of my Grant ($50) and left.

as soon as I got to the truck I blocked the guys number from being able to call us.

I felt bad for that, but I was so grossed out.
I went home to shower and change.

fricking hoarders.

TLDR - Hoaders are nasty pigs.

Yes I have. My job requires me to make home visits. You'd be surprised just how many people live like that.

skipped it.

Oh yeah, the guy offered me donuts too. lol

I kinda feel bad though, because I lied saying I was coming back. But I just wanted to get paid.
Also the guy kept telling me he had an account at the parts place I use and he would tell me the prices I pay for parts. And I hate that. People need to get that I am going to charge retail +15% everytime.
I don't care if YOU can get the part for $5, if retail is $30 you are paying $34.50.

But what got me was the floor to ceiling trash.

They had two dryer, one was broke but they couldn't get it out. The fridge and stove they were using was outside.

The guys were just sitting on the porch drinking the whole time. I wanted to screa, "get off your arse and clean out the trash"

The guy even made a comment "I bet you see it all"
I had just come from a slum in Central City that was 10000% cleaner than this place.

Mine too. I'm in 6-8 homes a day.

I come across messy people, but this is only the second hoarder.
This place could have been on the show and been the season finale.

When I looked at the place from the outside I knew I should have just drove off.

I have hoarders in my family on my moms side. She has a few sisters that live alone and each is a hoarder. As a kid it was just a joke and we could a least visit. Now their homes are a pile of trash that are completely unloveable. One sleeps in a recliner surrounded by newspapers over five feet tall tha could collapse and kill her. The smell is unbearable. The bathroom has a crawl space path to get to the leaking toilet that hasn't been cleaned since Reagan was president.

One died a few years ago so we went to clean her house to sell it. She always have good gifts when I was little and collected toys and such. Well we found a room full of never before opened toys from the late 70s and 80s. I've made thousands on eBay selling them. Hoarding can be lucrative.

Why can't I provide you a part?

Why do you have to screw people out of part prices if they're trying to save a few bucks?

I've only been in two. One in NOLA after Katrina. The women kept putting her inspection off. Finally told her we would close the claim if we couldn't inspect. She agreed and said the house away a bit messy. Stacks and stacks of old newspapers and magazines. Piled about 4 feet high. Paths cut through so you could get around the house. Didn't have to see the kitchen.

Recently went on one where a supply line to the toilet burst and I left a message for the woman and she called me back saying she was out of town. Ended up inspecting a week later. She was a hoarder, had three large dogs that pissed and shite all over the house. And the basemt had standing water with everything covered in mold.
I saw some bad shite after Katrina but this one took the cake.
Health dept came in and made her guy the house

Like that guy who had a GT40 hidden in his garage.
And I think MOST hoarders hold things for that reason.
When my grandpa was sick and my dad took over his finaces we found he had three storage units on the westbank.

So we went to see them since they were secret.
One was full of every piece of mail he had gotten since 1954. Old check stubs, bills, junk mails, solicitation.
All in boxes by year. Another was old bikes and car parts and another was newspaper and furniture that was all broken.

We found he was a secret hoarder.

So my dad cancelled the storage units and some poor sap probably bought three units of trash in an auction.

You can. But I put my labor in part prices, so it makes it harder for me to follow my pricing book.

But if you have the part and it's the right part then yes I will install it no problem.
But if it's the wrong part, then it can't be on me.

I don't see it as screwing people. I have to make money.
If I have to order a part or drive and get it, I'm not going to sell it to you for what I paid for it.
Many times my price is actually less than you can buy it for.

Like belts I get them for $3-5 each so I charge like $15, go to a store and they are $25.

See my issue with the customer providing the part is how do they know it's the right part?

If a belt snaps and you get a belt, sure I'll throw it on.

But one real life example was, I had a guy whose dryer went out and he tried changing the timer, but couldn't remember how the wires went.
So I told him I would just charge $40 to come out and install it since it's a 10 minute job.
I install it and then still no power. I check it out, and then find the $1 thermal fuse is blown.

So this guy spent $150 on a timer and $40 on labor, to find out the cheapest part on a dryer was the problem/

I also hate it when the customer takes the unit apart first and then says "I did all the work already"

I'm like "no you didn't I have to put it all back together to see what the problem is first.

If YOU KNOW the part that you need and get it, I will put it in, but you DO NOT get my 180 day warranty.

Because I didn't supply the part and don't know where you got it from.

Also you don't go to a store and say "That milk only cost the farmer $.75 a gallon why are you charging $4.50?"
In business you have to make a margin on everything you do.

Why are there never any sanitary, organized hoarders?

I've never been to a real hoarders house, but I bet it's interesting.

That sounds cheap, I ended up paying 500 for someone to replace my vent fan on outside unit when I could have done it myself for around 100. I was outta town and it was 95 degrees out

Why didn't you clean them out? You just told the storage place, deal with it?

Then it's called collecting.

I know a guy Fat Rob, he has a three bedroom house, two bedrooms are dedicated to Star Wars stuff.
His kids have to sleep on a couch when they visit.
But it's clean, so he's not a Star Wars hoarder.

Most people with money seem not to hoard, it seems to be people who want to hold on to things to save money or just have a problem letting go.

Usually I see it in old people's houses. I alwasy think the kids need to step in and help out.

But this place in the OP was two able bodied construction workers. Seemed like nice hipster types.

What I found funny was the comment he made "You should have seen this place yesterday before we cleared a path"

If you have to "clear a path" in your house, you have problems.

I, was younger.
I wasn't the one who made any decisions about the storage place.
My father was upset about the issue and just left the stuff there.
I never really questioned it, but the storage place made money on the sale. One of the lockers had two old motorbikes in it that used to be my uncle's so it wasn't ALL crap, just mostly.

I bet they didn't make much, if any, since it sat unpaid while they advertised the sale and whatnot. Doubt somebody paid a bunch of money for boxes.
