I think it looks great too. It's typical for someone to mechanically say it looks awful bc Reese leads but the subject matter is the kind i like.

I'm intrigued. I like the idea of the story at least

The book is great. But a lot of the reasons it's great is the inner monologues and the charm/wit of Strayed.
Don't see how you can reflect that well in a movie.

What does it mean to mechanically say something is awful.

Great subject but casting is a bit disappointing. Not a fan of Reese but I will definitely watch the movie. I'm curious to see what great scenery they captured.
Edit: Hmm, I looked up the story, now I'm not so sure I'll like it.
Yup, sounds sort of like Chris McCandless. Although her motivation was different, people who go into the wilderness unprepared are annoying and dangerous, because if they end up needing to be rescued they put their rescuers in danger. There's nothing romantic or inspiring about being an idiot. But I'll still watch the movie.

quote:
Convinced that nothing else can save her, she latches onto the unlikely idea of a long solo hike. Woefully unprepared (she fails to read about the trail, buy boots that fit, or pack practically), she relies on the kindness and assistance of those she meets along the way, much as McCandless did. Clinging to the books she lugs along—Faulkner, Flannery O’Connor, Adrienne Rich—Strayed labors along the demanding trail, documenting her bruises, blisters, and greater troubles. Hiker wannabes will likely be inspired. Experienced backpackers will roll their eyes.

If she gets attack by a bear she can always pull the "do you know who I am" scare tactic. I'd root for the bear.

I've kept meaning to read the book, will probably do that before I see the movie.

This looks like that Tracks movie.
I met a guy about 10 years ago that was nearing the end of the Eastern Continental Trail. he was an Irish guy who's family had been killed in a car wreck the year before. His parents, kid and wife were all riding in the car and all died.
Most people who do these types of things are either attention seeking people looking for bragging rights or people looking to run away from life for awhile. The guy was really nice and was telling me how much timing came into play with it, you have a window to be able to leave in and you have to make certain times or you are likely to get stuck by weather along the way.
All that said, the movie doesn't interest me a whole lot. Likes similar to 127 hours which was fine but not something I would run out and pay good money to see.
