What does the Gee acquisition have to do with Asik?

They can't be unrelated to each other right? We don't have the space to absorb Asik, yet we are taking on more salary? Gee can't get moved within a certain timeframe unless this is part of a 3 team deal with Houston to get Asik out of H-Town? Or am I completely off-base here?

@RealGM: The Alonzo Gee trade was never finalized/official between Cavs/Hornets.

And his contract is not guaranteed, so chances are he won't even put on a Pels uniform.

If Demps brings in Asik without dumping Rivers or any of the core 5, my faith will be 100% completely restored, and I will never question the man again.

And all indications are that a trade for Gee's contract would accomplish that.

We have broken the internet record today on threads regarding Alonzo Gee.

The 3.2 non guaranteed contract should clear the space to trade for Asik without moving Rivers.

ETA: This is assuming all of our ducks are already lined up. If Rivers' 2.5 wasn't enough, this makes sense. We can trade the non-guaranteed contracts of Gee, Ely, Babbitt, Ajinca, and maybe have a trade exception involving Aminu or Roberts (Memphis or another 4th team?) for Asik? Houston would then renounce the rights to those players?

How?

Gee was never on our team. Therefore he would be traded into cap space and we would then waive him. It doesn't create any space.

So someone explain it to me.

What will we send away? If we take on 3.2 mil then cut 3.2 mil, aren't we right back where we started? Or do we send the 3.2 mil to Houston for them to wave?

This is what I'm assuming is happening.

McNamara had written about how Demps wanted someone to do a sign-and-trade for a current Pels free agent to send out at least $2.4 million and hopefully at least $3.2 million towards this year's cap to complete the Asik trade. Using Gee's contract must accomplish the same thing.

Is there not a period of time that you have to wait to trade a player you traded for?

I thought the same thing, unless the trade will be a 3 way trade involving the Cavs.

Yeah, a straight up 2-team deal really doesn't make any sense to me. I'm not cap expert though so we'll see.

Alonzo Gee's contract is fully unguaranteed, so it could be going back out in the Asik deal.
