This is the best plan I have seen for what to do with the astrodome. I like the idea and it would make a great area for tailgating, rodeo, outdoor concerts, and other events.
Bottom line though is that something needs to be done with the dome. As much as I loved my childhood memories there, they have let it go to shite and has become an eyesore. This idea gives it the proper memorial it deserves and provides functionality with the space.

County leaders said Thursday they are open to considering a $66 million plan devised by the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and the NFL's Houston Texans to demolish the iconic Astrodome and turn the nearly 9-acre site into a massive outdoor space reminiscent of downtown's Discovery Green.

quote:

The project, titled the "Astrodome Hall of Fame," calls for tearing down the dome, bringing the floor to ground level and installing an open-air structure where the walls once stood, according to a 37-page proposal obtained by the Houston Chronicle. The plan, drawn up by two architecture and construction firms, is designed to pay tribute to "the Astrodome's history" and realize its potential as an "outdoor fulcrum" of NRG Park.

Renderings show what looks like the ribs of the former stadium circling a vast, grassy space with multiple event stages. Tributes to the various events, athletes and entertainers – from Elvis to Earl Campbell – who have played and performed at the stadium throughout the decades would be installed on each of 72 structural columns that would stand as tall as the 49-year-old structure.

Yeah I didn't pay that close attention to who was sitting at the table, that is a mess up on their part.

I actually think that is a badass idea, minus the shitty photoshop efforts. Would be a fantastic place to chill out/read up on the old place.

The most sensible plan to date, imo. Any plan that doesn't start with demolition is flawed at this point, unfortunately.

Funny I thought this was a good idea back in 2002.

It looks like the 2017 superbowl will be between Texans and the Cowboys.

That will be epic.

Probably turn into a huge messican gang riot after the game, but still epic.

I like the idea... but don't fill in the space. Leave it a bowl because that will allow for good seating for concerts/shows. Perfect for Texans games and Rodeo.

I'm just as sentimental about it as you, but blow the fricker up already and start anew. I don't think a Discovery Green type of atmosphere would draw the "right" people there that DG typically has but I do like the idea of doing "something" with it. Just has gone on for far too long.

Reliant would be incredible if it had been built in East Downtown. They really dropped the ball there imp

I agree it would be great. They would also need to move the Rodeo. Texans and Rodeo are married together.

Rodeo wanted a new stadium just as much as the NFL.

The Oilers would have probably gotten a new stadium had Bud Adams worked more closely with HLSR.

ROdeo would never allow Eado. their fans are all from the country. they need parking spaces. Also need storage facilities for the animals.

NRG park is perfect really. and HLSR is very much a political party down there.
