Hey all, I just recently moved to Baton Rouge and I'm looking for a good place to do some outdoor sprinting (preferably on grass) and hills. Maybe some of you know of a park or high school or something that has some nice open area. Also, I'm looking for a good gym that has plenty of free weights and doesn't look down on doing dead lifts, olympic lifts, etc... I've checked out a YMCA that's close to me and the membership is expensive and the equipment is crap. Also looked at an anytime fitness but it hardly had any free weights. Thanks guys

How much did they want a month? I've never seen a YMCA that was "too expensive". Are you expecting 20 a month or some cheap price like that? Planet Fitness is about your only option in that range and they sure as hell wont let you deadlift.

Once you accept that you won't get everything you want for next to nothing you should look into Spectrum, Foxy's, or Calloways. I haven't been in a Spectrum or in Foxy's in years so I can't really say what the quality of equipment is like. My friends who go to those gyms like them and don't have a problem lifting the way they want. Calloways has a Hammer Strength room as well as a place upstairs for some heavier lifting. The thing about Calloways though is most of their equipment sucks. It's all old stuff. Normally that would be ok if they had actually maintained the equipment but I'm pretty sure Donnie Calloway doesn't know what the hell he is doing. The Hammer Strength room would probably fit your needs just fine but don't expect anything to be in good condition. Rusted up machines and a floor that looks like it hasn't seen a mop in over a decade.

YMCA is $72/month for a family pass, and an individual pass is $42/month that's not expensive but i'm not paying that much for old equipment. I'm not asking for a whole lot here... just one decent barbell. My wife and I do a lot of olympic lifting and I'm not paying that much for bent rusty bars that are not conducive to that type of lifting. But thank you for your suggestions.

Which y are you talking about. You can go to any one with your membership. My y doesn't have bent bars, and does have tons of free weights.

Actually I can't stand crossfit. But thanks. Know of any hole in the wall, warehouse type gyms?

Wait so you like Olympic lifts and hole in the wall, warehouse gyms but cant stand crossfit... Wat? Haha Seriously though, the levee right by LSU is great. I used to ride my bike from Lauberge to The Belle then run sprints on the levee. Fantastic workouts. If you want a mileage run, the lakes are great. I miss the LSU area for outdoor activities.

I like the concept of Crossfit but I don't like how it's put into practice. Most of the trainers are idiots and have no idea what they're doing. I'll check out the levee though. Sounds like a good spot.

I second this. You will be around some good people as well. I have known the owner for over 20 years, one of the nicest and knowledgable guys I know.
