Friend's husband shot one of the family dogs (to put it to sleep)

My friend has three dogs, one of which is a chihuahua that they rescued from the pound a few months ago. The chihuahua was an old dog, partially deaf and blind. Two days ago, one of their other dogs got in a fight with the chihuahua and did a lot of damage, including pulling one eye completely out of the socket.
Instead of taking the dog to the vet to put it to sleep, her husband decided to shoot it (they live in town). He missed with the first shot, said the dog was so deaf and "stupid" that the dog thought that it was time to play when the first shot went off. The next shot got the dog and then he tossed the dog over the fence into a vacant lot behind their house.
My friend didn't think much of it. Honestly, I find it pretty disturbing. Am I wrong? No way I could shoot a dog, particularly with it wagging its tail thinking it is time to play. Guys may view this a little differently. Interested in your thoughts. thanks.

I'm not saying I would shoot a dog, but if it was mangled enough that taking it to the vet is just causing it much more pain, I would put a dog out of it's misery. That being said, I wouldn't throw my dog's body over a fence.

I tear up when I'm at the vet with my dogs when I see someone coming out with their dog that has just been put to sleep (and it has happened on my last two visits).
I could never throw a dog's body over the fence.

That's pretty fricked up. Take it in to get put down if it's time for it to go.
And how the frick do you miss?

Shooting it, while difficult to do, is the humane thing to do. Throwing it over the fence is a dickbag thing to do though. Bury it.

No you're not wrong. I am a guy and your friend is an absolute piece of human shite. A dog that thinks it is time to play is not so sick that it needs to be shot. No family dog should ever be shot in lieu of taking it to the vet in that situation.

My husband shoots our animals when they need to be put down.
And other peoples who don't want to pay the vet 300$

You're talking out of your arse. Putting a dog to sleep doesn't cost $300.

I did our family cat that way. First I called the vet, but they said it would be $80 to kill it and get rid of the body. I just took it to the woods an shot her. No biggie.

I could never shoot my dog. It's hard enough having one put down at the vet office.

When I was a kid, this is how people handled shite like this routinely. Nobody wanted to pay for a vet and probably would have been laughed at if they did.
I still know some country folk who do stuff like this.

How the frick do you think it is more humane to shoot a dog than putting it down at the vet? The dog was trying to play. It CLEARLY was not so mangled that taking it to the vet would have caused it more pain and suffering.

A bullet to the brain isn't exactly causing pain. When we had to put my dog down recently, she was trying to play until the last few seconds of her life, even though she could barely breath due to her throat being paralyzed.
