I'm on the roku development mailing list and just got this email.

quote:

Dear Developer,

Roku has had another successful year, surpassing more than 8 million Roku Players sold to date, launching our Roku Streaming Stick (HDMI® Version), and being ranked highest in user engagement by several independent studies. Just recently, Time Magazine named Roku 3 as the #1 streaming device in the market. We are building on our success by expanding the Roku device family to include Roku co-branded smart TVs (“Roku TV”). Roku TV is a dramatic new platform for your business to reach even more passionate viewers and content lovers.

Roku TV utilizes Roku’s proprietary software to deliver the Roku experience. Channels will be available on Roku TV just as they are via Roku’s set top boxes and streaming sticks. Your channel should be fully compatible, without any additional work.

Roku TV will be launching in the US in Fall 2014, with other markets to follow.

In the event that you have any questions about Roku TV, please contact Roku at developer@roku.com, and specify "Roku TV" in the subject line.

Sincerely,

Roku

How well do y'all see this going over? Personally, I've never used a smart TV that didn't suck at streaming and while I don't mind having another device attached to my TV this would be nice.

The only reason to do this is get higher margins on the TVs, but nobody's going to pay a premium for a "Roku TV". They don't have any cachet to bring to it, like Apple could if they ever produced their mythical TV set, and I sure as hell wouldn't allow my TV purchasing decision to be based on it coming with an $80 Roku built in. To me, it seems like the sort of thing a company does when it has no idea what to do next, so they go with a lame idea because it's all they got.

I've never had problems with the actual streaming, but the interfaces have usually been below par. I think the Roku interface + App Store is tops; selling their OS to tv manufacturers is a really good thing for them and for consumers.

I didn't see anything about premium pricing, but you're right. Why would anyone want a decent app interface built into their TV? You should contact all of the car manufacturers and tell them to stop including satellite radio in their head units, too.

I think the problem with the smart TV is the refresh cycle for a tv is much longer than a refresh cycle for a media player. A tv should last you 10 years, a media player? Maybe 2?

The software can receive updates, and I imagine the advances in hardware would be negligible.

My Roku XD, which is only a few years old, lacks many features that the Roku 2 and Roku 3 have. I definitely feel my box has become lacking.

The roku three had a much beefier chip in it than the roku 2.

I can see hardware improvements being required. I suspect better motion capture might require additional hardware, better voice recognition might require processor upgrades, and obviously improvements in wifi could require upgrades.

I can see smart TVs being really big in 10 years. I think the model around channels, and subscriptions needs to be simplified before it explodes. You could get stuck buying a very expensive TV that just becomes a dumb monitor b.c google or apple wins over Roku.

For now, I will stick with a dumb tv that I connect to a smart device that I can upgrade on a faster time cycle than my tv.

The thing is I am a gadget freak so maybe it does work. I dunno.

Sorry, I hooked onto "expanding the Roku device family" and glossed over "co-branding". If they're just licensing the OS, that would make sense. They can't do worse than the crap that comes built into current TVs.

And TV makers hate that. They want consumers to look at TVs like their tablets and phones and other media devices - disposable. They damn sure won't blast any sort of meaningful and free firmware update to their existing smart tvs. The gimmicky shite like new app interfaces and curved panels and interpolation is all they have, in between the real, useful improvements in technology.
