If it was known for sure that a baby would be born with severe mental retardation, would you still be opposed to the mother having an abortion?

It's an issue I struggle with, but no. It's not the child's fault so it doesn't deserve to die. It is difficult to ask the mother to have to bear that burden for the rest of her life, though.

Yes, because no matter how hard the child's life will be in the face of humiliation and cruelty, you are still depriving him/her of the greatest gift anyone can ever receive: love.

Killing a baby is killing a baby. Doesn't matter the reason.

BTW, what if one day we can determine with certainty that people are born gay or liberal or conservative or left-handed? For people who are inclined to kill babies in the womb, one bad reason is as good as any other.

I'm still perplexed that the following three words isn't the most common response to whether or not one supports abortion

Let me ask you a question in response to this...

A baby is born and you find out it's the next Martin Luther, do you kill it?

Yes. That child is a gift and no person can tell what type of life that child will have.

I would imagine the pregnancy would have to be pretty far along to determine that, so I would oppose it. I know they can detect Down's Syndrome pretty early on, but I don't consider that severe mental retardation.

Yes. I'd want to see the unborn child afforded every opportunity for happiness and a full life that I would a newborn with similar disabilities.

Is the child any less of a human being simply because they are severely mentally retarded?

You have the answer to your question.

No, if you dont want to take care of the baby then put it in a home or adoption. Something. Life isnt easy and its even harder for the handicapped, but death is not a better option.

If this ever becomes widespread watching the lib 180 over it will be hilarious.

My question to you is why is the mother the only one making the decision? Are women the only people on the planet that can determine the value of a life inside the womb?
