The FAA is investigating the video. “The FAA is looking into multiple incidents in which unmanned aircraft flew into fireworks displays to determine if there was any violation of federal regulations or airspace restrictions,” the agency said in a statement to The Palm Beach Post. Regardless, its incredible footage and we think its worth a few minutes to watch.

Saw some gifs and it's pretty awesome, but who would've thought that could potentially be illegal?

FAA is beyond idiotic with their stance on small UAVs. America is going to be 10 years behind other countries by the time they finalize their laws.

I think they are just trying to get ahead of it.
Think about it, if you owned a drone, would you not try the same thing? That's all they need is tons of drones flying into firework displays, with the potential of getting hit and falling out of the sky.
I'm assuming that is their argument, not that I agree with it.

That video is cool but that music...
All I could think the entire time was: "It's the fricking Catalina Wine Mixer!"

would have been cool if the drone saw the fireworks as a threat and fired back.

It's what we have come to. On the day we celebrate freedom, our government is searching for a way to penalize someone for filming fireworks in a new way.

First thing i thought of from the video was Step Brothers

You are failing to think like a government. Things they cannot control, they say are illegal.

I wonder if the fireworks violated airpsace restrictions as well?
I mean explosions in the air have to be more dangerous than a remote controlled helicopter. I dont really consider it a "drone."

The argument that a drone can be hit and fall out of the sky is a bit weak considering professional displays have to be thousands of feet away from spectators and account for wind direction from the falling debris of the display.
If a drone was hit by a properly conducted professional display it would fall into the water or an empty field from where the display is being launched.
Where it gets a but dangerous is flying one through a display put on by pyro like myself.

When did remote control helicopters become known as drones?

exactly.
it sounds far more sinister to call it a 'drone'.

If you have ever read my posts you know I am as anti-big GOV as they come but...
I can see the FAA being concerned about drones flying in restricted airspace. I.E. I don't want a bunch of them hovering at the end of the airport runway while my jet is taking off. So I am hoping this is the issue that they are investigating. Was this location restricted?
If I want to fly a drone in my backyard or at the school playground (below a certain altitude) then that isn't any of their business. If I go into restricted space or into higher altitudes (commercial airspace) then that is another issue.
OH WAIT! They already have those laws. So this apparently shouldn't be an issue.
