federal student loans for degrees in art, theatre, english, etc.

Seriously dudes - this is coming from a liberal -

Want federal student loans for an art related degree unlikely to get you an actual job ?

You got till you're 25 - or 4 years max - whichever happens first. After that get your own loans.

There's got to be some reasonable limit. If you want to use student loans to make a career change late in life - you should be reasonably restricted in your choice of major.

(i know a dude in his late 30's that's taking out loans for a friggin' theatre degree. he's already got a b.s. in english. go to law school dude!)

Abolish student loan system and make college tuition free through a tax.

This thread is too full of crazy. Liberals limiting government, conservatives pushing for taxes, cats sleeping with dogs!

I love that LSU just doesn't give a frick about the art program/building. Those morons protest thinking that people give a frick. They provide nothing to the school and, for the most part, nothing to the world. Very, very few of them will EVER be anything. They're nothing more than a required program in higher education.

I agree. Student loan money just seems to be flying everywhere now. I saw an ad from one of these tech schools offering a CSI tech degree. I can just see someone waltzing into the police station waiving their tech degree and wanting to be hired off the street to process a murder scene.

Tuba is right and you are wrong (unless you're being sarcastic).

If the federal government is going to back student loans they should have an interest in who and what they are backing.

IMO, if you want to major in a hobby get a conventional loan or pay for your eduction without a loan.

BTW, student loans are no longer forgivable through bankruptcy. You'll always be on the hook to pay them back.

Glad to find a point of agreement.

Except I would never allow student loans for anything that doesn't lead to direct employment.

Maybe for certain majors like becoming a doctor or an engineer.

The government should have never started backing student loans. They took the risk out of lending, and now you've got a bunch of people in college that have no business being there, and tuition has been hyper-inflated to boot.

Yeah, that won't decrease the quality of education AT ALL.

I would abolish (or place tuition limits on) student loans for folks to attend proprietary schools because they're a complete racket. They very, and unnecessarily, expensive because they know the federal government will finance up to 90% of the students tuition, so they can pretty much charge what they want.

Get rid of guaranteed student aid and watch tuition prices sink like a stone.

I agree 100%

Though again - within reasonable restriction.

There is value in simply having a B.S. or B.A. no matter what the major - but a second one doesn't add value all by itself - its got to get you work. People who already have degrees shouldn't be going back to school for anything but job retraining.

Put it simply - you get one shot at a post-secondary education purely for the point of learning - after that its got to get you work.

It won't so long as admission standards aren't changed.

In fact - if enrollment is kept constant - it will increase the quality of the average student because they would have to raise admission standards to keep enrollment constant.

That's probably an improvement of what we have, but I don't think it will actually fix the situation. We need to stop treating college as an automatic extension of high school. There are way too many shitty degree programs that we are subsidizing.

Actually, they've long been non-dischargeable except in case of hardship. In 2005, the hardship requirements were made even tougher to meet.

Something should be done to limit these loans. I have clients come in all the time with tons of student loan debt. I'm not saying they shouldn't be responsible, but they are suckered into them in many cases by aggressive student aid workers and shady "colleges" who promote shady loans.

Then fix the high schools.

What you probably consider a "shitty degree program" is actually one that doesn't net you a job

that's correct. The arts are very important to society, but that doesn't mean a degree in it is important to society.

You know well and good that if tuition was a paid through a tax that it would be viewed as a right.
