Will American citizens ever forget their family's heritage?

When people ask me "what are you?" I always reply with American, but most will reply with some country they are 3,4 or 5 generations from. I know a lot of families came over in the early 1900's late 1800's which really isn't that long ago, but 100 years from now will people still call themselves Italian, or Irish?

I know what my heritage is, but I never think of that. I definitely identify more with being from Louisiana, and now living in Texas.

Yes. It's more of a unique identifier, and people like to feel special.

Okay Rambo, no one has ever asked you that.

When asked, I always reply German and Cuban.

Never. However they will come a time where their heritage is American. People ask me where I come from and I tell them NOLA. All 4 of my grandparents where born in the city. Although, I am "25%" Italian, I have relatively no connection to Europe.

When you live in an area that has many different types of people, you get that alot.

I know I personally dont know my own history in detail beyond about 3-4 generations back. A lot of Americans are like this. This is why ancestry.com is a booming web site. Big data meets big ignorance.
Since our country is less than 300 years old, many people refer to themselves in the old country sense. I doubt you meet many Germans who refer to themselves as Prussian or even further back into European history. Some brits can trace ancestry right back hundreds of years, but they are still brits even if their names started in France (as mine did.)
To my mind, it all comes down to the age of our country. Less than 300 years is still new!
