It still boggles my mind that Barthelemy and Morial skated and C-Ray got busted.

Neither, to my knowledge, actually committed and indictable offense. You know, like actually violating a state or federal statute.

You know if Nagin had just stuck with the traditional political contributions and the like he would have been much better off.

Look at Morial. There is no telling just what he did to become the head of the National Urban League but I suspect he is making millions through the web that position makes available to him.

If your a political novice it is hard to see the difference between starting a marble company through political connections and simply hitting up contractors for political contributions.

The maximum sentence allowed for each charge, IMO. Politicians need to get the message that they are there to work for the people.

Death.

Politicians should be held to the highest standards humanly possible.

Betraying the trust of your constituency should under all circumstances merit the death penalty.

That's a tad strong.

I disagree, and as strong as it sounds, I believe it would curtail corruption extensively.

Why shouldn't those in power be held to a higher standard than the rest of us? The punishments should be harsh.

I think they'll give him 15 years. Just a hunch but I'd like to see him get the max.

taking post office "jobs" or lobbying contracts are not criminal but are bribes just like the marble counter tops.

Any politician that get convicted of corruption should get a public hanging. That might clean up politics

To the OP 20 years is completely reasonable to me.

In general, I agree. But, then again, the death penalty is a little harsh.

And then there's a situation like that of Oliver Thomas. Oliver did a hell of a job representing District B (I know firsthand the good work he did for 8 years for the neighborhood and not for personal gain). As Councilman at Large he did one stupid and very wrong thing . . . for a whopping $20,000 he steered a contract to an a-hole. He manned up, pleaded guilty without waffling and did his time. I still think he's a good guy and, on balance, his positives outweigh the negatives.
