WWII: Would You Choose the Pacific or Europe?

I've been on a WWII binge lately and just finished watching Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers. Prior to Band of Brothers, I re-watched Ken Burns, "The War" (both of which I highly recommend). All of which have lead me to consider if it's possible to prefer one front of war versus the other?

For me my preference would be Europe. War is hell no matter where it is but the Pacific seems like a special kind of hell. I imagine being in the Pacific is like being stuck in the Ardennes during The Battle of the Bulge for the entirety of the war. As an observer, the Ardennes forest represented the worst of Europe; being stuck in Belgium during winter with no supplies, as artillery rained downed upon you mixed in with falling trees and splintered wood. I imagine everyday in the Pacific being like this

In The War, someone comments that you can surround 50,000 Germans and they'll surrender but if you surround 500 Japanese they'll fight to the death

But it really isn't close.

I don't think you'll find anyone who says the Pacific.

Pacific. I'd rather sweat my arse off and pop japs by the dozen than freeze my arse off while panzer divisions try to kill me.

ETA: I'd die for sure though.

As far as I can get from this!

But then again, I'm not a jew.

quote:

Japanese butchery, disease, exposure to the blazing sun, lack of food, and lack of water took the lives of approximately 5,200 Americans along the way. Many prisoners were bayoneted, shot, beheaded or just left to die on the side of the road. "A Japanese soldier took my canteen, gave the water to a horse, and threw the canteen away," reported one escapee. "The stronger were not permitted to help the weaker. We then would hear shots behind us." The Japanese forced the prisoners to sit for hours in the hot sun without water. "Many of us went crazy and several died."

Europe IMO. I'm no fan of the cold but I'd rather face that than all the other potential environmental threats the pacific has in addition to the Japanese

During World War II, most U.S. black soldiers still served only in maintenance or service positions, or in segregated units.[113] Because of troop shortages during the Battle of the Bulge, Eisenhower decided to integrate the service for the first time.[113] This was an important step toward a desegregated United States military. More than 2,000 black soldiers had volunteered to go to the front.[114] A total of 708 black Americans were killed in combat during World War II.[115] LINK

So Saving Private Ryan or Thin Red Line?

Updating OP to add that I recently watched Saving Private Ryan for the first time in addition to Band of Brothers. Letters from Iowa Jima is next on my viewing list and I will now add The Thin Red Line .

I'm also open for any other suggestions of good war movies and/or documentaries.

Given the option I would take my happy arse to Europe, but being a Marine my arse would be in the Pacific.
