The actual city of Los Angeles is a terrifying concrete hellhole. There are some extremely nice places to live in that area but they're suburbs; it isn't "big city" living the way living in NYC or SF would.

This is a dumb misconception. I'm guessing you've never been to LA?

There are shitty parts for sure, but West LA is absolutely awesome. Many of the extremely nice areas you mention lie within city limits.

Only if you can afford to live in certain neighborhoods. Same goes for every other city in California simply because of the incredible cost of housing.
