what else do you expect from a place so racist, this their floor .

Ernst simply calling a spade a spade. Yeah it's probably racist especially since I doubt the policy is enforced any other weekend. 15% would be more reasonable and probably still 10% more they would have made anyway.

I just became a big Ernst fan

Friend of mine when I worked at a restaurant called them Spostas. I didn't know I was sposta leave a tip.

The floor part cracks me up. Those were installed long before the nazi party, and those aren't swastikas anyway, they are reversed.
As for the policy, at least they are open. Lots of places in the past would "close for renovations".

i don't care. some places close their doors completely for their "summer vacation." if you don't wanna pay, don't give them business.

The fact is restaurants in New Orleans have been closing over the summer for renovations or staff time off for years and years. July 4th is a ghost town in New Orleans and a terrible night for restaurants (most people are barbecuing/on vacation). This time off often coincides directly with Essence Fest and every year it becomes a race thing.
But it isnt. Its just restaurants saying business will suck this time of year so we might as well close and get repairs done.

They have the story of the floor on the wall.
I hate people.
I adore Ernst. It's my home base in New Orleans.

I jumped on open table over the weekend just to look at availability in the Quarter/CBD. You could have dined in any restaurant that was open.
Went to Mariza Friday night when the Bywater was packed for firework show. Zero wait for a 6 top without calling in advance.
ETA: Napoleon, was that on Twitter or something?

Yep.
TONS of European cities shut down in the coldest months for the same reasons.

Exactly. July 4th (unlike say the night before Thanksgiving or day after Thanksgiving) is not a good holiday for restaurants. When it falls adjacent to a weekend, it is terrible for business. So places close. Always have, always will. Essence has no bearing on that.
PS before people jump on here and say but Jazz Fest. Jazz Fest ends at what 7 pm. Lots of opportunity for dining post a shower. Essence runs all night, that takes a lot of people off the reservation books.

Maybe in August, but Emuch of Europe in winter is bustling. Now places will close for 2 weeks over Christmas/New Year's but it isnt due to lack of tourists.

Eh, I agree with most of what your're saying, but to say Essence has zero bearing would probably be incorrect. I wouldn't guess it would be the main case for closing, bu I'd say it has a small part in some of those decisions. Hell, there was a thread on here last week started by a restaurant manager that was bitching about Essence and wishing he could close like some other restaurants do.

La Pavillon once told my dad that during the Bayou Classic, some of the guests actually tried b'que in the bathtubs

See edit. You have all these people in town for a concert weekend. Awesome. What time are the concerts 5-11 pm at night? Not awesome for a restaurant trying to make money at dinner time.

It was on Facebook.

like the Bayou Classic, not everyone in town is there for the game.
It's like the freaknik for grown folks.
Instituting a tipping policy that weekend only and mentioning the Essence fest in name tells me 100% it has to do with the fest being in town.
Hell I don't mind. African Americans are usually considered to be bad tippers.

This.
Tons of N.O. area people go to the beaches over the 4th. I know of at least five friends that are small business owners that are not in the restaurant business that close for the week of the 4th.
If I were Ernst, I would have probably lowered it to 18%.

I've been trying to book a trip to Spain at the end of January.. almost Feb, and a ton of the cities I looked at were commented by travelers as ghost towns during the time of year because it's cold and just not as busy.
Obviously, it's not the majority of cities. But plenty do.
