Last month, the city council voted to eliminate the city's 70% subsidy of health insurance premiums for members of the force. Premiums were also increased, apparently prompting an onset of the "Blue Flu" since June 30.

Mardi Gras was canceled 35 years ago due to a police strike.

These kinds of government jobs have got to be brought inline with private sector jobs. Taxpayers can't afford to pay 100% healthcare premiums for life for public safety workers anymore.
They also need their retirement changed. At least here locally, they can retire with full benefits after 20 years, so essentially a 40 year old can be retired and receive a pension and healthcare free for the rest of their lives. It's unsustainable anymore.

It's been that way up here for as long as I can remember. Is it different where you are?

20-25 was all it took in most places.

My Dad retired in his early fifties. My Mom could retire right now.
Both with guaranteed pay for life.
(60% salary)

Military you can retire in 20 years as well.

Not debating the merits or lack thereof of what the city council did concerning the police health insurance and pensions... but they can still spend what... 40 million plus on the joke that is Beale Street Landing, that doesn't even do what it's supposed to do and spend what... another 60 plus million on renovating the Raleigh Springs Mall? So that people will still not go to it? Memphis has the dumbest city council in the country. And just thinkg... Soon, Southwind and Wyndyke will get to experience all that dumbness.

The earliest you can retire in memphis is 25 years. You have to be 21 to be hired, so the youngest one could be would be 47. As far as the sustainability of the plans, before the market crash in 2008, the pension and healthcare funds for memphis city employees was funded at over 100%. I would say sustainability is not an issue in a healthy economy.

Not saying I agree where the cuts were made, but CUTS had to be made.
One of two things had to happen - either cuts made or higher taxes. My property taxes are sky high already. Hopefully the beale street landing/mall can increase income through tax revenue (just trying to look at bright side)
No one likes to see cops/firemen cut. Especially when, contrary to many peoples thoughts, MPD has been doing a knockout job keeping crime contained. People like to hate one Memphis but violent crime is relatively isolated, and recently we have had the problems of New Orleans or Chicago.

When I see this though I can't help but think of a bunch of conservatives wanting liberal benefits
If the problem gets bad enough we will have to figure some other way to stop the city from going broke
End rant

Have not had*

Calling in sick is not the way to do it.
Either strike or quit - my own opinion

I certainly don't want either.

All of this. I grew up outside of Memphis and had a front row seat to the idiocy that is that city's leadership. From Herenton on down, it's been a travesty. Heck, look at how much they dropped on Peabody Place -- it took just 5 years for it to become a ghost town and just a decade to completely close down. From the huge financial shortfall of the Memphis City School System to the issues with Beale to the FedEx Forum to AutoZone Park, it's a dumpster fire in terms of money mismanagement.

You can blame a lot of people, but the cops should be at the bottom of that list.

Most policemen and military aren't getting paid jackshit for what they're doing.

The retirement package is what makes it worth getting shot at for 20 years.

What's fair market value to patrol in the Middle East or most metro areas in this country?

Complainers... Please answer this question. How much would it take for you to protect and serve?

Completely agree with cops should be at bottom of list

O and screw southwind and those others that are trying to pull out (that's what she said). The richest people in the city don't want their taxes to go to the city but they want to enjoy all of what the city has. Live in fear behind your walls.

Fact. People take a public sector job at low pay (compared to private sector) in return for a generous benefits and retirement package. Plus job security. Fifty-sixty years ago, local governments set it up that way so it would be cheap then. Pay me later in essence.

Well now everyone is retiring and living longer so, surprise!, the system can't sustain itself.

Ultimate problem being that you hired these folks promising them something and now want to change your promise halfway through. Sucks all around.

Umm.. they are trying to keep memphis from annexing them. Not pull out. Memphis literally has nothing to offer the residents of these areas, other than new property tax bills. Nothing whatsoever. They don't need Memphis... Memphis needs their property taxes. I wouldn't want to be annexed by them either. If they go anywhere, it should be to Germantown.
