An easy "don't have to think about it" maintenance is always nice, but as far as I know, you still get charged for every repair, just at a slight discount. So, if you need repairs regularly and often enough, might be worth it if you aren't ready to replace the unit. Some of those HVAC guys can get carried away with recommendations though, like charging $100+ to replace a capacitor that is merely losing some charge (normal behavior for capacitors that happens over time). But I'm only concerned about that not-100%-necessary nickle and dime shite because I'm OT Poor.

had to have new coil installed in one of my trane units a couple months back. cost me big $$. suppossedy the maintenance comes with two annual site visits where they come service everything.

don't know why this industry has become one of the sleaziest in its field, jmo, but AC units are pretty simple, very few components, pretty reliable, usually a simple, quick fix, even with the service contract, you'll more than likely be charged with a service call, freon, of course, and they'll more than likely find something wrong, not covered under the agreement, if you keep your filters clean, and keep the outside unit clean(takes about 15 minutes, or less,) you'll be doing yourself a big favor in prolonging the life of the unit, and keeping repair calls down

Maybe what I should've asked is how many service their unit annually. I'm thinking I should but not sure if it's cheaper to have them come service or get in the contract. I'm also thinking every other year, possibly.

That's how all this crap in my head got started. I make effort not to blow grass clippings in it but noticed there was an accumulation.

I ran to the hardware store and bought some coil cleaner. Pulled off the guard and cleaned it. Then, out of curiosity, searched the net and saw there were things I wasn't comfortable servicing BUT I think if someone were to show me I could.

I have it. Advantages are that if there.is an issue its fixed right away, you vet a 15%.discount on any repairs, helps prevent the major repair, and put to the front of the line if the thing suddenly craps out. They also treat you as a valued customer and are more personable. My guy has about three dozen contracts

Disadvantage is that when the guy checks it and says all is well you feel taken to the cleaners, but is that not what you would want to hear?

He cleans my accuclean filter as well. I have cleaned it and it takes about 15 minutes, plus he washes the coil.

I grew up in a household where you did nothing unless it broke, and that would come at the worst possible time and would charge the crap our of you because you are now at their mercy. So far no issues knock on wood.

If its easily affordable I recommend it.

normally don't have to take the cowling off to clean it every time, I just use a water hose, never have used a cleaner, there are some things that you can easily do, you tube it, or ask here, after you go through all of the obligatory smart arse answers(I'm guilty sometimes too,) you'll get some good info here

I believe in maintenance contract especially with a reputable company. I find I get immediate service if/when something does go wrong. And the twice year review is a good maintenance practice. Not sure if I would do it myself if I didn't have these guys do it.

I got ya. It takes the burden off of you if you value that. I service my car regularly, why would the ac be any different. Could you live without ac or heater if it broke on July 3rd at four pm?

I had to put in a call a few weeks ago, there was a leak and I was low on freon, plus the service call charge. I looked over the maintenance plan cost vs. discount just on that visit and I saved enough to pay for 10 months of the contract. It's only a year-long contract and they will be out again in the late fall to do a cleaning. Also only locked in to a year.

Let me tell you good folks what a service contract means from an A/C guy's point of view, 38 years now,I don't do service contracts, never have and never will.

A service contract means that I get to show up at your home/business twice a year, during MY slow periods, and get paid for a service call plus any nit-picking thing that I think you will buy, extra charge of course.

It is money in my pocket and you don't get shite.
You don't get a discount on one damn thing and you don't get faster service unless I am not busy...see how this works yet?

What you should do is keep your filters changed, every damn month.
You should take a hose, no nozzle, no thumb, just water pressure, and rinse your condenser coils off at least once per summer month.
You should call a service company that you trust, relationship building is a good skill, and have then come out once per year, late spring is better, and tell them you want the contactor replaced on the condensing unit, nothing more, nothing less. 99.99% of you wouldn't understand why if I told you.

If you have to add freon every year, tell them to find and fix the damn leak, it's just that simple.
If they tell you need a new evaporator coil because it leaks, make the guy show you the leak, if he can't, run his arse off and do not pay him or call him again..see how this works yet?

If you are too busy to handle that then enjoy your fricking, the A/C people sure will.

Thank you. That's the kind of stuff I was looking for.

777 or WoodCrafter, how bad do the fins have to be bent to be concerned. I bent a few on three corners taking off the cowling. It's less than an inch wide and deep.
