When I heard Jarnell Stokes (Tennessee) and Johnny O’Bryant III (LSU) go back-to-back, because they were like No. 35 and 36, I thought there was a good chance I would go in the next pick or next couple of picks. I didn’t hear my phone ring, and they kept going with these international players.

...Late in the second round I left the draft party and did not want to continue watching it, at some point around pick 50, as I figured at that point I would not get a phone call. I went back home and spoke to my agent later that night. He said, “Don’t worry about it. We’re going to take care of everything. We got 10 teams interested in you for Summer League and the fall.”

Less than 12 hours later – I didn’t go to bed until 2 or 3 a.m. – he told me the top three teams for me were New Orleans, Detroit and Philadelphia. Those three teams had the best opportunity for me. He was going to work on a guarantee and money deal for training camp. The Pelicans were the first team that offered that and said they wanted to draft me but did not have the opportunity. So, I got some guaranteed money as well as a spot in training camp after Summer League play in Las Vegas, Nevada.

It feels good going to a situation with a team that really wanted me but couldn’t get me instead of a team that would get me on the team just to have me on the team and see what I could do. The general manager, Dell Demps, called me and said he’s really excited for me to be here. He wants me to play defense and rebound in Summer League and everything else will work out. I was excited to hear from him, especially with him saying those things. This definitely feels like the best scenario for me right now.

...I flew into New Orleans on Sunday. Over the next few days before we leave for Las Vegas, we will be in the facility getting physicals, working out and probably putting some team concepts together for Summer League. It’s like a three-day mini camp mostly with rookies and the players who will be on the Summer League roster on July 11.

Thanks for sharing. He seems like an easy guy to root for. Hope he can stick around.

agreed

I thought he would get drafted.

I always thought he could have been so much better at Florida. What troubles me is that I believe Donovan is a good coach and that if he could not get Young to perform better I am not sure what NBA coaching can do in the next two years while he tries to develop.

Really hope this kid can get it together and be a gem.

Florida stats last season.

FG% .541
REB 6.2
BLK 1.1
PTS 11

yea the knock on him sometimes was that he looks like tarzan (dude is yoked),plays like jane...but donovan rotates guys in and out all game so it can be difficult to get into a rhythm. he seems like a guy who could carve out and earn a role as a bench big.

I guess the easiest argument to counter Young's unimpressive stats is to look at what Parsons did at UF (11 ppg as a senior). Like S said, Donovan likes to rotate guys and they play at a very slow pace. Hard not to root for a guy like Young, really liked watching him play at UF.

yea they have enough talented guys on their squad where they can go pretty deep. donovans recruiting has been insane since that noah-horford-brewer group.

those days they were a much tighter rotation, i think guys like chris richard and hodge were their first 2 off the bench.

he has the tools, just gotta put em to use. if he makes the team it'll be on the strength of how he rebounds and establishes himself as a presence defensively like he says they asked him to do.

i wanna see him get on a mean streak at both ends

I could definitely see him becoming a rebounding/defensive specialist at the very least. Look at Reggie Evans

From Summer League:

quote:

Jim Eichenhofer @Jim_Eichenhofer · 15s

Gates joked that Saints coaches aren't allowed to watch rookie Patric Young (6-9, sculpted 240 pounds) practice; they may want to sign him

I was hoping the Rockets would pick him up. Good get. I watched a good number of UF games last year and he can dominate.
