I'm looking to get in better all around shape, and swimming laps seems like my best option for doing so...I'm not new to swimming, but have never swam laps on a regular basis.

Anyone swim laps on a weekly basis? Any input available for a beginner?

Thanks

Great workout if you have access to lanes. It a hassle in most cases.

For a beginner, get this:

You keep it between your thighs and swim. This way you can crawl for longer periods to build up swimming stamina without having to concentrate on staying above the water. You can still kick, but more importantly, you can concentrate on your form. Deep side to side shoulder dipping strokes with your upper body. Concentrate on getting a good rhythm with your stroke and breathing. Speed will come later. Set nonstop crawl goals and increase.

Look into a Masters swimming program. You could swim with other people and have an instructor on deck and I know most of them have flexible hours for you to swim early, after work, or even at your lunch break. You'd probably be paying more than a YMCA membership, but you'd get more out of it.

That sounds like a great idea..if anyone knows of any masters swimming programs in the Nola area, please let me know..

Yes, don't give up...

Eventually in time you will be doing 40 / to laps in no time...

Really a great work out. I started up yesterday after taking 7 months off

I just swim laps for 45 minutes. I try to push myself as hard as I can.

Just a heads up about swimming. If you are looking to improve fitness levels, do it. If you are looking to lose weight, don't bother.

Swimming tricks your body into thinking you burned more calories than you did. You know how you're always starving after you swim?

I saw my college roommate gain weight swimming. Dude could swim forever, but that didn't mean anything for his weight.

This! I swim with a masters group. We have a coach and he's really good. Lots of different ability levels. He stands on the pool deck and barks orders at us, but it's all good. He's also about 85 with a dodgy knee. Swimming, like running or anything else, is a great workout if you find a good group/coach.

That's too long. You need about 30 minutes of hard swimming, non stop laps.

After that, you're fatiguing your body.

I get bored with laps and lose count too. When I swim I use the triathlete's swim-hole on the lakefront. It's almost a 1/2 mile out and back. Before I could swim that far I just tried to swim one more piling each time out. I could swim a full lap after 4 times and now can swim a mile.

A friend of mine that could not swim well went to lessons at Newman, learned an efficient stroke and then started swimming at the swim-hole.

I don't bother counting. I'm much more concerned with time.

I swam for 10 years and had the opposite problem. Swimming, just like any other workout, is only half of what you need. You still have to eat smart too for to lose weight.

I'm tall and lanky. Swimming seems like a great fit, as I'm not looking to lose any additional weight, only to get in much better shape..

I pulled a Californian´s pool regiment from the internet many years ago (they were in Chicago, and obviously couldn´t surf, but wanted to stay in surf shape).

Good stuff. Went like this:

250 (10x25) warmup free
250 breast
250 free sprint (45 second rest between each)
100 back
100 butterfly
100 breast
200 medley your choice, warm down

Yeah, definitely give swimming a shot then. I was always in incredible shape in high school from pretty much just swimming. We did a lot of "dryland" exercises but none involved weights. Just a lot of core strengthening.

Check with the different club swim teams around the area and see about Masters swimming. Of the club teams in NOLA I can think of Nu-Wave and CCSC. I also believe there used to be a team at Elmwood so I wouldn't be surprised if they had some type of Masters program too.
