Is he really that bad? And if so is there really no one better than him?

Most of us here aren't football but experts, but he does look totally lost at times out there.

I watched him in the Spring game, and he's always standing close to others that make the tackle..But, he does seem to drop and cover well, just looks like he would be a liability against a power running team, and better against a passing/spread team IMO...

Our DL actually being worth a shite could assist the entire LB corps immensely...fingers crossed.

He's crafty.
Amazing he's mangled to stay in the rotation.

Prob bc of his motor.

That's one of the most intelligent points I've read in a while; and I read The Economist.

Speed Welter does not have. Speed covers up mistakes big time. For example, recovery from a missed assignment or misread can be corrected with speed.

Even if Welter reads the play correctly, if he can't get to a spot on time, then it is a fail.

That's what I've heard about Welter. Good brain, slow feet.

Chief loves hybrid LBs on the weak side

I think it is a counter move to spread offenses. Some guys are great at it, some struggle.

Maybe we should let Chief make the decision about Welter. My guess is he knows more than anybody on this board.

I believe supatigah is right about the counter for spread teams. Welter reads VERY WELL, especially pre-snap. He is incredibly slow though, thus the surplus of mistakes. He is WAY above average when he drops back in coverage though. Welter plays because the positives of his game far outweigh his lack of speed. We don't get passed on in the shallow middle very much because of Welter. His ability to get the defense in place pre-snap and cover passes means that there is less that the front seven has to do to be successful. Unfortunately for us last year, our defensive line was overrated and didn't perform up to standards, which I think made Welter look worse than he really is in run support.
