Woke up this morning and life was all good. The area of the house that this particular unit covers was 72 degrees so the unit has been working. It kicks on and then an immediate screeching noise starts. It is a pretty loud, high pitched noise. I can specifically located it but it seems to be around the top where the fan blades are. Obviously I don't want to pay double for a holiday weekend, Sunday call out. Any ideas what this could be? The A/C is about 11 years old and has had very few, if any problems.

TIA

Bearings on the fan are shot. You'll need a new fan motor. Depending on the model of your A/C you may be able to wait until tomorrow. If you have a newer unit with electronic controls it will detect the resistance and shut your unit down.

You need a new fan motor. They're easy to change. Three wires and a couple bolts.

Very solid help. Thank you. Is this a do it yourself type thing? Where would y'all recommend looking for a part?

Not sure you can find a fan motor today. You most likely will need to go to an AC supply house.

But, you may be able to oil the shaft of the motor to help it along till tomorrow. Or, maybe there is a hole to put the oil in. Good luck!

Lube the fan shaft in the area of the bearings on the top of the motor as a temporary fix until you get it replaced.

Sounds like a the fan. Stand next to the unit while it's running and have someone turn the unit off. If the noise winds down as your fan slows, you've found your problem. It's an easy/cheap fix if your handy and not that expensive if you pay someone else to fix it.

Mine did the same thing last year - had to replace fan motor - bill was around $200 for my experience...

Turn the unit off.
Use silicone spray, right down on the shaft. (Of the fan motor)

If that doesn't work, use spray penetrating oil.

You can get both items at Lowe's or HD.

High quality synthetic grease on the shaft on the output of the fan motor will do you some good. Disconnect the ac or turn the breaker off before disassembly of the shroud. You should have a local pull out disconnect located within 3 feet of your outside unit

Thanks for the help guys. It was the motor and a buddy of mine came to help me replace it. Honestly pretty easy. He did say the blades needed replacing because the assembly where the blades meet in the middle was slipping on the motor. I will snag that piece tomorrow but thanks OT!

I got it for less than $125. However it was a brother in law deal. Online prices were $216 for the name brand Emerson model.
