This movie has so much potential but I just don't find it entertaining.

I had enjoyment out of it. But it was an appreciation for the attempt I think, not the accomplishment.

agree completely. It was an ambitious undertaking that never seemed to meet my expectations. More an historical analysis than a movie meant to be an entertaining

having said that I enjoy the portrayal of the characters by certain actors.

I saw it in 7th grade. I asked my dad if he wanted to see it. He refused because he said the reviews were awful and that every sentence was repeated. "it is surely hot out here today. It is surely hot."
On consideration, I agree. Half the lines seemed like filler to be honest.

They cast it beautifully. However, like was said, it is more a strict academic portrait of what happened rather than a movie made for entertainment.

It should have been a TV miniseries. That way you could have actually fit the whole book in there instead of making it a semi-biographical film about Stonewall Jackson's exploits in the Civil War.

Gods and Generals was so much more than what ended up on screen. The Extended Director's Cut does a better job of fleshing out the book, but there are so many added and unnecessary characters. Hancock, who was a major player in the book, is practically reduced to just a few scenes. Lee had a much bigger part to play in the book, too, but they heavily reduced that in the film as well.
