Ten years ago pool guy talks me into the cool paint for around pool, ok...it's just f'n paint there is no cool to it. Now it has lasted a long time but worn out and I would like to go with the new stained concrete. Anyone with tips on getting old paint off and ready for stain?? Any contractors you might refer me too....Little help OT.

Unless you grind down the concrete Im not sure you will get the desired look.

Not sure the stain will even hold if there is paint residue.

If you are in BR pay a visit to Casco off Airline.

Concrete paints are designed to seep into the top layer of cement. To get rid of the paint, you would probably have to grind out enough cement to expose the aggregate too which would make a good stain look like shite. Acid-stains actually give tint to the cement and not to the rock so you would get some really awful colors going on.

One option would be to really rough up the top layer and do a thin overlay and then stain that. They make a polymer overlay that has really good adhesion and impact resistance that takes stains really well. Finding someone that does it is another problem all together.

Assuming the correct type of pool deck pint was originally used, it was acrylic paint. That is some tough stuff. I suggest a new coat of acrylic paint instead of stain.
