Ditching the 9, .40 found lacking.

10mm is the only obvious answer.

We assisted on a ftx for two Special Forces groups a couple of summers ago. I was talking to one young stud about their side arms and he told me he used some leave time helping their armourer rebuild a 1911 for each team member. He said that when their deployment was over the teams still there were fighting over the pistols.

I think they need to play around with some smaller caliber bullets and bigger cases. Similar to the 5.7 x 28. Something around 6-7mm that's fast. The smaller diameter bullets and faster will help keep recoil down and faster bullet creates more shock in a wound channel.

Deer rifles are pretty much all smaller that 9mm

I wonder how a 10mm necked down to 6.5-7mm would perform.

The MHS will be an open-caliber competition that will evaluate larger rounds such as .357 Sig, .40 S&W and .45 ACP.

All of these calibers have more power and are better than the 9mm. Glad out armed forces are not scared of a little recoil.

"Most of the guns in .40 caliber on the market right now were actually designed to be 9mm originally and then turned into .40 calibers later," Langdon told Military.com.

Put the 40 caliber on a 45 frame instead of the wimpy 9mm frame and you eliminate most of the recoil thus making the 9mm obsolete except for target shooting.

The glaringly obvious thing to me is that they should allow them to use expanding ammunition. Until they do that, when it comes to hardball ammo, the bigger the bullet, the bigger the hole.

The MHS would replace the Army's inventory of more than 200,000 outdated M9 pistols and several thousand M11 9mm pistols

So does this mean we'll have the option of buying one at great price?

Not a chance. They will be equally distributed to the cartels in Mexico and the ISIS movement in the Middle East.

There's no way the government is going to let this number of firearms end up in he hands of law-abiding citizens.

Related question:

How is the 223/556 the round that is defending the USA? I mean it's just a 22 on steroids practically? How does it suffice compared to say the ole .30?

Maybe they should put more focus on marksmanship vs spray and pray.
