geared toward the black community?

Essence Music Festival this weekend, Bayou Classic Thanksgiving weekend, to just name a couple.

I always thought this was a stupid move, basically eliminating half the tourist that may want to visit on these holidays.

Oh, so you named the only two major black events.
This weekends crowds are great for the city.

My friend is the manager at the Hilton and they dread the crowd from the Essence Fest. Don't tip, bring hot plates in the rooms and cook in there. The rooms may be booked but the spending is way down compared to other main events.

No one travels to NOLA during 4th of July. Anyone coming to NOLA for thanksgiving are coming to visit family, regardless of other events in city. And like others have said, those are the only 2.

Pretty smart to have it then.

FIFY

Would more money be spent on this weekend if the festival was not down there this weekend? Move it back one week.

Agree with this. The summer is the slow season for New Orleans Tourism

You know the 4th isn't always on the weekend right?

But there is usually a 4th of July weekend (unless it falls on a Tuesday or Wednesday). Is the Essence Music Festival on the weekend of the 4th?

Hotels would likely be full for those festivals no matter what weekend they fall on. They should move them to non holiday weekends so they can cash in on holiday travelers as well.
