Some of you may have seen my topic a few weeks back about potentially moving to the Portland, OR area from Sarasota, FL. Well I got the offer, and have a week to decide. This is a big move, so I'd love any advice.

Here is the summary:
-Base salary is $10k more
-Cost of living is slightly less
-Semi annual bonuses are at least $15k (per Glassdoor) but are discretionary
-I would be using my Finance degree
-I'm 24 with no relationship to worry about

I think my main concern is whether making ~$60k is enough to live there. I would be living in WA, so COL is cheaper than in the city.

Thanks

If you like beer, the area is full of cool brewing stuff. That's the one area that I would consider moving that is far away because all the beer there.

Do it, build your career and then worry about settling down when you're 30.

I personally wouldn't move across the country for 10k more a year. Do you like where you live currently?

I'd only move from the south to the northwest if I was going to be able to save substantially more money, not just make more money. That's just me though. Which job has more room for potential growth in the future?

Also, I got about the same raise that you have on the table and it bumped me into the next tax bracket, so while I'm grossing 10k more a year I'm barely netting more money per paycheck. Keep that in mind.

Do it.....experience in finance using your degree is extremely important toward your longterm goals.

Finance degree here....tried for a couple years to get in....had to stay sales side. It has always pissed me off how hard it is to get anything entry level in legitimately financial(ie junior analyst)

Make the move man Portland is an awesome city. I live in the Bay Area but Portland is on my short list of cities I want to move to.

Lots of good microbrews, fun place to be in your 20s

Cons:
Clouds and rain suck. It's a different type of rain than you get in the southeast. A constant drizzle for hours/days.
People are a bit more liberal.

Much closer to Vancouver and tons of outdoor fun activities. Be gone in a minute but I'm not much of beach person.

Using your degree is nice, money sound ok for a new college grad committing to a job not the rest of your life. Figure out to get the bonus and your living very nice for a young guy with no commitments. Might be nice to get out of comfort zone and try something new but only you can decide. There are far worse places to try to make a living then in Portland.

Isn't Sarasota cost of living really high. Could you make it there on 60,000 because I think you would do much better on 60,000 in Portland

My first job out of college in the 90's was 28,000. At least you convinced someone you worth 60,000 which is good money for a single person.

~$60k is what I think will be my floor for the first year.

They will reimburse up to $2k in moving expenses.

But I will now have to factor in rent, since where I'm at now is where I grew up.
